  3. What is our role? We provide assistance to you in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development. What is your role? Be honest, take responsibility for your actions, and understand confidentiality.

  4. Confidentiality Has Its Limits When do we have to break confidentiality? • Instances of abuse or neglect • Intent to harm oneself or someone else • Duty to warn and protect *Counselors, teachers, administrators, etc. are all considered mandated reporters and must report certain issues to the proper authorities.

  7. What’s a GPA and who cares? • Grade Point Average (GPA): A = 4.0 90-100 B = 3.0 80-89 C = 2.0 70-79 D = 1.0 60-69 F = 0.0 59 and ↓ • Cumulative, Core, College • Determines class rank

  9. How do I calculate GPA? Step 1: Assign each grade a numeric value. A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0 Step 2: Multiply the numeric point value by the units of credit attempted. Step 3: Total the values from step 2 & divide by the total number of credits attempted. AP Courses and some honors classes earn quality points

Report Card vs. Transcript Report Card • Grades from one semester • Unofficial document • Used by parent or guardian • Includes some personal information (address, State ID) • Includes semester GPA Transcript • Record of all high school final grades • Legal official document • Used by colleges, military, and employers • Includes identifying personal information (SS#, DOB, address) • Includes class rank and cumulative GPA

  16. Alabama High School Diploma Requirements • 4 English • 4 History • 4 Math • 4 Science • 1 Physical Education (1-ROTC, 2-band) • ½ Health • 1 Career Preparedness • 3 CTA Electives (Career Technology, Fine Arts, or Foreign Language) • 2 ½ Additional Credits • TOTAL: 24 credits (minimum)

  17. Graduation Requirements • Promotion requirements • 9th to 10th: 6 credits • 10th to 11th: 12 credits • 11th to 12th: 18 credits • 24 required credits to graduate! Must pass all required courses and participate in the state assessment to graduate!

Being Successful in High School Basic Requirements • Come to school regularly • Be in class on time • Have your materials • Pay attention in class • Complete your assignments • Find out what you missed when absent and make up work in a timely manner Going Above & Beyond • Review & Preview notes • Attend tutoring • Communicate with your teacher • Take detailed notes • Study nightly • Keep a calendar • Stay organized
