GS Level 3 structure 2011-12 Petroleum Pathway (40) Geology Pathway (30) Minerals Pathway (30) Environment pathway (30) Final year core modules, including 7 day fieldtrip (40) Option (if required) (10) OR OR OR Dissertation (40) Final year core modules,: choose minimum of 3 from 4 (Plate Tectonics, Mountain Belt Processes, Past Global Environments , Basin Dynamics) Plus one of the fieldtrips : may be pathway dependent /recommended Each pathway has an additional ‘pathway core’ except Geology pathway: free choice

  5. Pathways within the GS programme What are pathways? Coherent groupings of modules chosen to give you the best preparation for particular branches of geology Who says they are the best portfolios? Colleagues in industry who will be in a position to employ you Regardless of which track is followed, you will receive a BSc in ‘Geological Sciences’. BUT they are very useful on CV, and for references

  6. Pathways within the GS programme • 'Geology pathway‘ • Provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake a broad and balanced programme of study that provides general coverage of all of the key areas within the discipline.

  7. Petroleum pathway Provides training in exploration geophysics, sedimentology, structural geology, and resource geology. Recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the hydrocarbons industry.

  8. Minerals pathway Provides a background in ore geology, mineral exploration and structural geology; Recommended for candidates intending to pursue a career in the extractive (mineral exploration/quarrying/ mining) industry.

  9. Environment Pathway Faces the interaction of geology with human activity, where you solve environmental and engineering problems using geological techniques and knowledge: • contaminated land, • engineering geology, • Quaternary geology • site investigation • environmental remediation • hydrogeology

  11. 1. Cyprus GS facingLeaders: Cris Little, Ivan Savov Information on the various field trips • Open to all • 10-11 days • Assessment by exam • Cost roughly £300

  12. Cyprus (Env Path) Leader: Jared West Very good for GS as well, especially if taking Engineering Geology and/or hydrogeology. PLUS Suitable for Minerals track students who have an interest in remediation/environmental impact

  13. N Yorks CoastLeaders: Richard Collier and James Lawrence • Compulsory for PP students • Good option for other GS students interested in petroleum industry and/or sedimentary geology

  14. N Ireland: Curraghinalt Rob Chapman and Bob Finch Strongly recommended for Minerals Track Follows through exploration and Mine Development process: 1. Determining tectonic setting of Au mineralization at Curraghinalt

  15. 2. Gold exploration: prospecting for Au- bearing veins and ‘panning back to the source’

  16. Intro to diamond drilling, Core logging Underground trip: Curraghinalt mine

  17. Northern Ireland Fieldtrip SOEE 3720 Quaternary Geology, Hydrology and Soils Course leaders: Simon Bottrell, Jerry Lee Suitable for Environment pathway and GG

Topics covered: • The Quaternary record of glaciation and deglaciation in the South Sperrins • Post-glacial processes and soil formation in the South Sperrins • Geology and hydrology of the Cuilcagh karst (Fermanagh) • The Quaternary record of the retreat of the Irish Sea Ice Sheet (Co. Down)

Content: what we do: • Examine the sedimentological and geomorphological evidence relating to the last glaciation and since. • Use this to reconstruct environments and processes active at that time. • Build up a sequence of events that occurred as the area emerged from the last glaciation. Where we do it: County Tyrone/Sperrins: • History of ice sheet on land, its interaction with the landscape, post glacial processes to the present day. County Down coast: • Examine deposits related to the retreat of the Irish Sea Ice sheet .

  20. Preference survey • We need to get a rough idea of numbers for the various fieldtrips. • Please fill in the form with preferences 1-5. • THIS DOES NOT COMMIT YOU TO ANYTHING

  21. Registering for the Cyprus trips The Cyprus trip has an upper limit of students (usually about 40) who can register. Also, you have to pay extra for the trip, which includes a deposit. You can pay your deposit online at the University shop Unlike other modules you cannot register directly for the either of the Cyprus trips. This will be done FOR YOU by the office staff AFTER you pay your deposit. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Cut off date is 12 noon Monday Sept 24

  22. Cut off for other field trips THE SAME DAY as for Cyprus - Mon Sept 24th. For the Northern Ireland and N Yorks Coast trips the School will pay ALL transport and accommodation costs ONLY if you have registered by Sept 24th. IF you have not registered by this time and you join subsequently YOU are responsible for any extra cost in making one-off transport bookings

  23. Is the geology pathway ‘non vocational’? NO!! Core GS programme Basic high quality grounding for all aspects of geological employment = + = Pathway Added value in specific fields of employability

  24. How do I choose my modules? Depends on the pathway Petroleum Pathway • Field course : N Yorks (Compulsory) Must include 3500 Basin Dynamics and Pet. Systems from core modules And at least 3 from: 3060: Advanced Sedimentology 3450: Structural Geology 3630: Strategic Energy Issues 3740: Seismic Interpretation (strong recommendation to take all 4 of the above)

  25. Minerals Pathway Field course: Ireland Strongly recommended Cyprus (either) permissible Minerals Core = 3600 Ore deposits + 3450 Structural + At least one from 3102 Isotope geochemistry OR 3460 High temp processes OR 3135 Engineering Geology

Environment Pathway Field course: Either Ireland (EP) OR Cyprus (EP) Environment Core = AT least 2 of 3110 : Earth System Science: Biogeochemical Cycles + 3135: Engineering geology + 3821: Physical and Chemical Hydrogeology You need to take either 1 or two other options (free choice) depending on your choices above

  29. Thinking of an MSc?? Optional Modules give you the chance to prepare for a particular type of postgraduate course. If you are interested in an MSc course in Leeds: speak to the MSc programme convenor BEFORE you choose . You need to check your proposed timetable: Core and options will not clash but individual option modules might clash with each other.

  30. ‘Special’ Modules Geology Into Schools (10 credits, Sem 1 & 2) • Introduction to secondary school teaching, focussing on geology. • 20 hours spent in a school working directly with teachers & delivering material you have designed. • Limited places; if interested see/e mail Phil Murphy. • A good chance to find out if teaching is for you. • Builds contacts with local/regional schools who run geology courses. • Expect to undertake some travel but the costs will be reimbursed.

  31. High Temperature Processes • Not obvious from the title what is involved! • Research- lead module- low contact hours but a lot of private study : sem 1 AND 2 • You choose one of the topics on offer: (some run by Dan M. some by Rob C. some a mixture) magma chambers, metamorphic processes, evolution of ore deposits. • Some restrictions on projects IF you have taken 3600 BUT ores related options still available • The module involves some practical work to generate your own data. • Good experience of research • Good for the c.v.

  32. Pre-enrolment and registration Pre-Enrolment is “on-line” and starts on 8th May Go to the ‘Student Services and Admin’ tab in the Portal

Flowchart for choosing options Pick choice/s Complete pre-enrolment Check timetable If OK you can pre-register when the time comes If there is a clash select other option/s • Make sure that you are enrolled for a total of 120 credits of modules, at least 110 of which should be at Level 3. • It is your responsibility to ensure that your module enrolment is correct, not the School’s. • The Semester split should 60/60 or 50/70 at most.

  34. Exams information • There are rules governing progression to year 3. • You need to gain 100 credits to progress (honours). • PFP modules (Pass For Progression) vary between courses: for GS and EG these are the core modules. • Students with Special Circumstances that have affected their studies must notify Katrina Firth in the School Office ASAP and not later than 18 June 2012. • An email will be sent to all students in the next few days confirming information relating to examinations, publishing of marks, and resit & progression procedures.

  36. Next academic year • School of Earth and Environment registration and compulsory start of year meetings will commence on Friday 21st September 2011. • You need to be in Leeds on this date NOT ON HOLIDAY!!
