Guidance & Counselling The Guidance & Counselling dept works with First Year students by: • Meeting with each class during first term • Helping students manage issues such as the timetable, homework and study • Helping students with issues such as building friendships, self-esteem and integration • Helping students with subject choices • Explaining the anti-bullying policy and dealing with issues as they arise • Helping students with personal problems

Mandarin Chinese & Chinese Culture • 2012 Confey first school in Ireland to offer Chinese as full optional subject • Link with NUI Maynooth & UCC • In addition to French/German • Chinese Govt teacher • ‘Language of the future’ • Enhanced employment opportunities • Non-exam subject • Very challenging – only recommended for above-average academic students

State Examinations: Junior Certificate • Junior Certificate at the end of 3rd year • Mathematics available at 3 levels: Higher, Ordinary and Foundation • French/German, Business, Science, Art will have a common level paper (New JC subjects) • All other subjects available at Higher and Ordinary levels currently • Coding/ECDL and Mandarin Chinese are not Junior Cert exam subjects

New Junior Cycle • Phased introduction began with English only in 2014-15 • Science and Business Studies began in 2016/17 • Irish, Modern Languages and Art to begin in 2017/2018 • Classroom based assessment component in 2nd & 3rd Years • Final exam set and marked by SEC • Results and school based profile to be presented to students at end of 3rd year • Grade system changes to Achievement Descriptors instead of grades.

  21. iPad Initiative • iPads introduced for teachers in 2012 • iPads introduced for First Years in 2013 • Review & evaluate October 2016 • Information meeting for parents of incoming First Years on February/March details to be forwarde.

  22. iPad Initiative • All current First Years opted for iPads • Cost: €8oo iPad and eBooks. Many parents bought through Credit Union at a discounted rate. • Monthly repayment of about €25 • Reporting an enhancement for teaching and learning • High-quality Apps available • No heavy bags
