  1. Introduction to Gender Guest Lecturer: Jennifer Carlson

  2. Our Plan • Why gender? • What is gender? • Why do people perpetuate gender norms?

  3. Why Gender?

  4. Why Gender?

  5. What does this “game” tell us about gender? • Physical attractiveness defined by and in relation to men. • Related to “natural” characteristics. • Enforced by others through bullying and harassment. • Internalized as individualized failure

  6. Does the woman in the clip have “false gender consciousness”? • “False consciousness”: an internalization of ruling ideas. • Critical point: “Taking off the blinders” benefits subordinate/marginalized groups.

  7. What is gender? Gender is a collection of norms, practices, and relations that (1) split the world into two mutually exclusive categories (masculinity/femininity) and (2) reward some people while punishing others.

  8. What is this gender ideal we are all chasing?

  9. Idealized Gender Emphasized Femininity Hegemonic Masculinity

  10. Idealized Gender • Intersects with Race, Class and Sexuality • Is naturalized through performance

  11. Gender takes work.

  12. Gender takes work.

  13. But do all women do the same kind of gender work? How does “natural Kate” compare to the “fair & lovely” journalist?

  14. Work…that pays off? The “Beauty Bias”: • “The less attractive you are in America, the more likely you are to receive a longer prison sentence, a lower damage award, a lower salary, and poorer performance reviews. You are less likely to be married and more likely to be poor” (Bennett 2010, summarizing Rhode 2010). • Hirsch found that among immigrants to the US, the impact of being “one shade lighter” on income was equivalent to one year of education. • Men are not exempt! • These dynamics are global.

  15. Work…that pays off? Costs of Doing Gender • Health Concerns • Low Self-Esteem • $$ • Happiness (Supposed) Benefits of Doing Gender • Social, Cultural and Material Capital • Upward Mobility

  16. Why do people perpetuate gender norms? 1) False Consciousness 2) Weapons of the Weak…?

  17. Resistance Roller Derby!
