  11. Identifying the gender • Genders are sometimes, but not always, logical. • Logical: derBruder; die Schwester • Illogical: das Mädchen • There are some patterns, but the best way to learn a gender is to memorise it with the noun. • http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/german/comedy/gender_bender.shtml

  12. Der • Days of the week, months, seasons and cardinal directions are all masculine nouns. • Words with the following endings are usually masculine: -el; -en; -er; -ig; -ich; -ling; -and; -ant; -ar; -är; -ast; -ent; -eur; -ier; -ist; -ismus; -or; -us

  13. Die • Most trees, fruits and flowers are feminine. • Words with the following endings are usually feminine: -age; -e; -ei; -heit; -keit; -schaft; -ie; -ek; -eke; -ik; -in; -ion; -tät; -ung; -ur

  14. Das • Names of cities and most countries are neuter. • Words with the following endings are neuter: -chen; -lein • Words with the following endings are usually neuter: -tum; -ment; -eum; -ium; -um; -ett • Infinitives used as nouns are always neuter.
