  10. Another pattern of simple sentences expresses an identification: This pattern takes a form of ‘to be’ and a noun phrase, as exemplified below.

  14. Now, we’ll talk about an action without transitivity. We use a sentence with an intransitive verb, or a verb that requires no object. Take a look at the examples on Page 25.

  17. Numerous transitive verbs are used to express an action with transitivity. Such verbs require an object signifying the receiver of the action. Take a look at the examples on Page 27.

  25. The sentence pattern below takes a transitive verb and a receiver with a complement in the same position as the direct object in the previous pattern. The subjective complement in this pattern is normally a noun phrase. The sentence pattern is used to express designation. Study the following sentences.

  27. The American people elected George Bush Jr. president. The Dean appointed Dr. Somkiet Deputy Dean. The village headman made my uncle his assistant. That seems quite simple, doesn’t it?

  28. With a different set of verbs, the sentence pattern also expresses one’s opinion or conceptualization on a particular person, object, or event. The list of verbs in this pattern includes think, believe, imagine, consider, and suppose. Verbs in this group may also take an adjective as a subjective complement.
