  3. Freedom Summer (1964) • Black and white college students who offered to help black Mississippians register to vote • Three were killed by Klansmen… • Who were acquitted of the murder charges by a white jury

  4. Voting Rights Act of 1965 • Dr. King led a march from Selma, AL to Montgomery AL in March 1965 • Once again brutally attacked by white police • Literacy tests for voting were outlawed • Federal govt. would keep an eye on problematic states
