  16. What to bring • Umbrella • The temperature is roughly within a 20 degree range so packing is easy • Pack clothes for outdoor activities (hiking, soccer, running) if you plan to participate in them • A camera • A journal or blog…some sort of way to keep track of memories and experiences

  17. What to bring • A few (lightweight) books or DVDs (consider bringing an e-reader to eliminate the weight of multiple books) • Pictures/mementos from home to decorate your room and help alleviate homesickness

  19. Electricity and your stuff • Electrical current varies from outlet to outlet, so a voltage converter is not always necessary, but the chances of needing something to adapt the shape of the plug are high • The sockets have switches which turn the electricity on and off • The UK uses 220-240V

  20. Money Matters • The British Pound Sterling currency is the GBP. Always be aware of the current exchange rate between GBP and USD • Most banks are open only during the week, from late morning to late afternoon. • If you choose to open a bank account, bring your passport and a proof of residence in England • There are many ATM’s but be careful to cover your PIN when inputting it • Many ATM’s have a charge, some don’t but you are able to use most debit cards

Staying in touch • Portsmouth is 6 hours ahead of Kansas time • The university provides free internet, so Skype, GoogleTalk, Facebook, etc. are all easily accessible means for staying in touch with friends and family from home. • Remember not to let staying in touch with people back home overshadow having new experiences abroad

Medical concerns • Recommended if you are not up-to-date with routine shots such as, measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT) vaccine, poliovirus vaccine, etc. • For prescription medicines you take every day make sure you have enough to last during your trip. Keep them in their original prescription bottles and always in your carry-on luggage. • Check the Center for Disease Control’s website (www.cdc.gov) for any additional vaccines necessary before arriving in the UK.

Things to do • Shop –Within walking distance • Gunwharf Quays, which offers over 90 outlet designer shops. • Southsea has a mix of high street and independent and specialist stores • Albert Road, with its collection of independent and quirky shops, retro clothes, antiques and crafts • Eat – Variety of restaurants and cafés • Gunwharf Quays has a great range of eateries, with over 20 bars and restaurants • Southsea has a range of contemporary cafés, individual bars and restaurants to choose from

  25. Things to do • Spinnaker Tower- Rising 170 meters tall, the tower offers amazing panoramic views over the city, the harbor, the south coast and Isle of Wight. It boasts Europe's largest glass floor and is the perfect vantage point from which to see the city.

  26. How’s the weather? • Summer temperatures are not warm, on average at just under 70 degrees • Winter in Portsmouth has averages around just above 50 degrees • Climate can really be defined as temperate. There is not a big change throughout the year.
