African Resistance. Africans resisted European attempts to colonize their lands Europeans had high amount of superior arms Africans could raise an army and would surprise the Europeans with their military ability All attempts would ultimately fail. Resistance Continued.

  1. African Resistance • Africans resisted European attempts to colonize their lands • Europeans had high amount of superior arms • Africans could raise an army and would surprise the Europeans with their military ability • All attempts would ultimately fail

  2. Resistance Continued • Algeria resisted French rule for almost 50 years • Led by Samori Toure who fought the French for 16 years • East Africa resisted Germans in planting cash crops • Maji Maji Rebellion

  3. African Resistance • East Africans had a belief in magic water as there main weapon • Germans had machine gun posts • Magic water does not work and the Germans kill 75,000 Africans • 150,000 died of famine

  4. Ethiopia Able to Resist • Menelik II emperor of Ethiopia 1889 • He played the British, French and Italians against each other • He built up arms • Signs a treaty with Italy • Italy changes the language of the treaty

  5. Ethiopia Able to Resist • Menelik II declares war on Italy • Ethiopia defeats the Italians at the Battle of Adowa in 1896 • Menelik II continued to collect weapons for future foreign problems

Effects of Colonial RuleNegative • Africans lost control of their land • Europeans brought new diseases (Smallpox) • Africans lost their traditions and culture • Homes and property transferred away • New boundaries put into place creating problems with the Africans • Divided African groups and forced rival groups to be together

  7. Effects on Colonial RulePositive • Reduced local warfare • Some places saw improved sanitation, hospitals and schools • Life spans increased and literacy rates improved • African products had value internationally • Railroad, dams and telephone & telegraph lines were put into place
