  4. Review: Essential Knowledge from Chapter 1 • What is the number one cause of death in the US for people ages 15-24? • Motor Vehicle accidents • Leading cause of death for people all ages? • Heart Disease

  6. This Week: Personal Nutrition • Activity: What did you eat yesterday? • Write down, as best as you can remember, every meal you had this weekend. Try to estimate serving sizes. For example: • Breakfast: 2 fried eggs, one piece of toast, orange juice • Lunch: ham and cheese sandwich, ½ cup of potato chips

  7. Personal Nutrition Any volunteers to share their day’s diet? How does it compare to the USDA’s recommendations?

  8. MyPyramid Recommendations: • Protein: 5 to 6 ounces • Fruits: 1.5 to 2 cups • Veggies: 2.5 to 3 cups • Dairy: 3 cups • Whole grains: 6 to 8 ounces • Oils: 5 to 6 teaspoons. All fats are NOT created equal!!

  21. Activity: Food Labels • You’ve read an overview of the different types of food. What’s in the label? • 560 cals, 10g sat fat, 1010mg sodium, 47g carbs, 25g protein • What is it? • 130 cals, 1.5g fat, 31g carbs, tons of vitamins • What is it? • 7 cals, 0 fat, 0 carbs, 0 protein, tons of vitamins • What is it?

  22. Details about Nutrition • What is nutrition? • The science of the way your body uses food. • What are nutrients? • Substances in food that provide energy or help form body tissue. Necessary for life and growth. • What are the six classes of nutrients? • Proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fats, and water

BALANCE AND MODERATION • Too little food causes weight loss and poor growth. • Too much food is stored in the body as fat. • Too much body fat increases the risk of: • Heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, high blood pressure, cancer, and many other chronic diseases and disorders • What you eat now affects your health into your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s…

Metabolism • What is it? • Sum of the chemical processes that keep you alive • Requires Energy and nutrients • Energy comes from carbs, fats, and proteins • The more energy your body has, the more efficient your metabolism can be • Therefore, we need food (calories) to provide energy and nutrients to our body’s processes (metabolism)

  25. Calories • What are calories? • It’s how the energy in food is measured • Review figure 1 on page 155

Carbohydrates • What are carbohydrates? • Simple and complex sugars • Simple: single/double sugar molecules • Complex: many sugar molecules linked together • Sugar (glucose) provides ENERGY for your cells • FRUCTOSE and LACTOSE are good sugars • SUCROSE is bad sugar • What products provide these sugars? • Foods are broken down into GLUCOSE sources

  27. Starches: A form of complex carbohydrates Broken down into energy for the body Comes from foods like potatoes, beans, peas, and grains (rice, corn, wheat) Roughly half of your diet should be from complex carbohydrates

Fat • Is an essential nutrient • Saturated fat is unhealthy, and comes from: • Meat, whole milk, butter, ice cream • Unsaturated fat can lower risk of heart disease: • Olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, corn oil, soybean oil • Why is cholesterol important? • Makes vitamin D, cells, hormones, and bile • Too much cholesterol can add plaque to blood vessels and lead to heart disease

Proteins Muscles, skin, hair, nails are made up of protein Protein helps build new cells and replace old ones Excess protein can be stored as fat Proteins are chains of molecules called amino acids Complete proteins: come from animals Incomplete proteins: legumes, grains, veggies Your body needs amino acids, and a diverse diet will provide all that you need

In Class, Group Project Each group is responsible for a 5 minute presentation on their section of Chapter 7 Each presentation should summarize the section’s essential knowledge Group 1: Vitamins & Minerals (161-165) Group 2: Water, RDAs, Food Labels (165-170) Group 3: MyPyramid & Guidelines (171-174) Group 4: Healthy Diet & Nutrition for Life (175-179) Group 5: Diet Needs & Vegetarian Diet (179-182)

  35. In Class, Group Project You WILL be graded on this You MUST work in groups. Students who work individually will receive a zero on the project. Every group member must speak during your presentation You will turn in one presentation preparation paper with each group members name on it outlining all of your information.
