  1. Water contamination and Habitat loss How does water contamination lead to habitat loss in estuaries?

  2. What is Water contamination and Habitat Loss? Water contamination is the contamination of a water bodies. Habitat loss is the process in which a habitat Is determined not able to support life.

  3. Estuaries • Fresh water meets salt water • Affected greatly by water contamination. • Home to many species and are part time homes for many other species. • Many coastal communities are building around estuaries making them subject to a large amount of contamination. • Many species are dying. • Sources of contamination are sewage, agriculture, channel dredging, coastal settlement, and nutrients.

  4. Why Is this a Problem? • Loss of Biodiversity. • Disruption of food chain. • Less production in the fishing industry.

  5. Who is Affected • Species that live in estuaries can become endangered. • The rest of the food chain. • Animals that live there part time. • Animals don’t migrate back to their other home, food chain there is affected.

  6. What will happen if not addressed • Species in estuaries will go extinct. • The food chains within estuaries will be disrupted.

  7. What's being done • Many organizations working to clean up and protect various rivers around the world. • These organizations also work to protect the estuaries these rivers feed in to. • No laws that we know of that are against or for estuaries. • Estuaries may be protected through river laws.
