Registration Timeline • Feb. 25 -Counselor led registration meetings in 1st period classrooms for rising 10thMarch 4 - 12thgrade students. • March 4 -15Rising 10th - 12th grade students enter course selection into SPAN either at home or at school. • March 8Application Course deadline: Last day for students to turn in completed applications to teachers. • March 8,11,12 Counselors available in the Media Center during HOT Lunch to assist with SPAN course registration & to answer questions. • March 15 Deadlinefor students to turn in finalized SPAN course registration forms with parent signature to 1st period teachers. • August 9Last day to drop an AP Course for both semesters. • August 30 Deadline to request Mid-year Graduation • August 30Deadline to request Late Arrival/Early Release for 1st Semester • January 28Deadline to request Late Arrival/Early Release for 2ndSemester

  3. Graduation Requirements • Refer to handout for FRC graduation requirements. • Future-Ready Core (FRC) – students who entered 9th grade in 2009-2010 or later. • If you entered the 9th grade in 2008-09 or earlier, see your counselor for graduation requirements.

Important Changes in NC Graduation - Social Studies Requirements For students who entered the 9th grade in 2012-13 (current freshmen), you will take 2 semesters of American history (instead of US History) in the following order: • 9th grade: World History • 10th grade: American History I • 11th grade: American History II • 12th grade: Civics & Economics

  5. SPAN Instructions • Refer to the link on the HSHS Website for SPAN instructions or ask your counselor. • Counselors will be in the Media Center during H.O.T. lunch March 8th, 10th, and 11th

Course Selection • Choose your courses and alternates carefully – based on: • Teacher Recommendations (in SPAN) • Discussion with your parents • Consultation with your counselor • Academic needs and interests • Postsecondary interests • Career interests • If you choose a class and it is a primary or alternate selection, you will remain in that class.

  7. Recommendations • Log in to SPAN. • Click on “Recommendations” tab to see teacher recommendations and comments.

Course Selection • In SPAN, click on “Course Selection” tab. • Choose 8 primary courses. • These are the 8 classes that are your top choices (core courses and electives). • Choose 3 alternates. • These should be classes that you want to take in case of scheduling conflicts, courses being dropped, or other administrative reasons.

Dual Enrollment Career & College Promise (WTCC) Attend a CCP Info session at WTCC before you sign up: Career Tech Ed pathway courses – Herrick College Transfer pathway courses- counselor Students taking courses at Wake Tech must provide their own transportation. NCVPS – Submit Dual Enrollment form to your counselor; only for courses not offered at HSHS

Early Graduation • Early Graduation forms are available in Student Services. • Turn in Early Grad forms to your counselor • Students planning to graduate early should contact the colleges to which they plan to apply to determine that early graduation will not affect admissions. • Notification of approval will be made by letter.

  13. Early Release/Late Arrival • Procedure – forms available in Student Services/on line • Deadlines • 1st semester: August 30st • 2nd semester: January 28th • Athletic eligibility • need to pass at least 3 classes each semester (on-campus) • meet NCHSAA standard academic and attendance requirements (see a coach or website for details) • Students should contact the colleges to which they plan to apply to determine that early release will not affect admissions. • Early release/late arrival will affect your parking place assignment.

AP Courses • Summer assignments may be required for some courses • Please visit the HSHS website for more details • Deadline to drop an AP class is August 9, 2013 • This deadline pertains to 1st and 2nd semester classes. • Requests to drop AP classes after August 9thmust be submitted in writing to Student Services for review by an administrator.

  15. CTE Courses • If you take a CTE elective, we strongly encourage you to choose a pathway and take courses within that pathway. • For more information about CTE pathways and concentrators please see Mr. Herrick, Career Development Coordinator, or a CTE teacher.

Attention Juniors • Contact your counselor if you would like to schedule an individual meeting concerning registration/planning for next year • There will be a National College Fair on March 19th 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Raleigh Convention Center. Check our website for more information & to sign up • Reminder - Spring SAT Test Dates: May 4th & June 1nd Register at sat.collegeboard.org

Summary • Read the handouts you are given today – including the CFNC Checklist for College • Registration must be completed by March 15th. • If you do not register through SPAN by the deadline, counselors will select courses for you. Changes to this schedule will not be permitted. • Turn in course selection sheet to your 1st period teacher. A parent signature is required.
