  1. Warm-Up 11/1/13 • Which has more energy and WHY • Rolling a marble or bowling ball at pins • A car on the top of a parking garage or a car at the bottom of a parking garage (consider the work it is capable of doing)

  2. Kinetic and Potential Energy Friday 11/1/13

  3. Types of Energy • There are two main categories of energy • Kinetic • Potential • All of the other types we will learn about fit into one of these larger categories

  4. Potential Energy • “The energy of position.” • Based on height, mass, and gravity • An object with potential energy has the potential to do work (apply a force over a distance). • When an object changes position (like through falling) it does work and potential energy decreases.

  5. Amount of Potential Energy • More mass = more P.E.

  6. Amount of Potential Energy • More height = more P.E.

  7. Calculating P.E. • P.E. = mgh • (mass)x(gravity—always 9.8m/s2)x(height) • Ex: How much potential energy does a 4 kg object have that is 5 meters off the ground?

  8. Kinetic Energy • “The energy of motion.” • Mass • Velocity • Contains stored energy in motion. • If the object slows down, it lowers in kinetic energy.

  9. Amount of Kinetic Energy • More mass = more K.E.

  10. Amount of Kinetic Energy • More velocity = more K.E.

  11. Calculating Kinetic Energy • K.E. = ½ mv2 • (mass) x (velocity squared—v x v) • How much kinetic energy does a 10 kg object traveling 3 m/s?

  12. Your Job • Finish the questions on the back side of the notes! • Take out the homework on machines from Monday—2 of you have turned it in. We will go over the answers w/ the last 5 minutes of class. • Simple Machine Manual DUE MONDAY • Simple Machine QUIZ MONDAY
