  1. Warm-up 11/14/13 Give two examples of how Washington was “sly as a fox.” Remember the middle colonies worksheet??

  2. Battle of Brandywine General Sir William Howe and General Charles Cornwallis launched a full scale attack on General Washington at Brandywine Creek near Chadds Ford, PA. Howe and Cornwallis split their 18,000 British troops into two separate divisions, with Howe leading an attack from the Front and Cornwallis circling around and attacking from the right flank Washington was outnumbered by the 18,000 British troops to his 11,000 Continental soldiers, and so he ordered his men to retreat to Germantown. The British abandoned their pursuit of the Continentals and began the occupation of Philadelphia. The Continental Congress which had been meeting in Philadelphia fled to Lancaster, PA.

  3. Battle of Germantown Takes place less than a month after the British win the Battle of Brandywine. After the Battle of Brandywine, the British have control of Philadelphia. Washington developed a complicated attack plan which called for four columns to hit the British at one time. The plan called for Major General Nathaneal Greene to lead a strong column against the British. These attacks were to be supported by columns of militia which were to strike the British flanks. Marching through the darkness, communications quickly broke down between the American columns and two were behind schedule.

  4. Washington made the erroneous decision to launch attacks on the position, all of which failed with serious losses. Despite the defeat, the Americans were encouraged by their initial successes.

  5. Battle of Saratoga British General: John Burgoyne American General: Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold What was the plan by the British? -The plan by the British was to isolate New England from the Southern colonies. Burgoyne and his Iroquois allies took back the Fort Ticonderoga! After this Burgoyne took his time sailing down Lake Champlain from Fort Ticonderoga. Burgoyne expected General Howe to meet him by sailing up the Hudson River because there are only 23 miles separating Lake Champlain from the Hudson Burgoyne thought that those 23 miles would be a piece of cake! However, it runs through huge road less forests full of hills and rivers.

  6. The Rebels were smart! They blocked Burgoyne’s way felling large trees and burning bridges. *Burgoyne would not have lost the Battle if General Howe had sailed up the Hudson and to combine the British forces. After this American victory, the course of the conflict changed as France entered the war on the American side. The Battle of Saratoga is considered the turning point in the American Revolution.

  7. Winter At Valley Forge Once again in the winter, armies stop and hunker down. *Washington decided to set up camp at Valley Forge. *The land was owned by farmers and had grain and meat. However, the Washington and his men did not receive money or food for 2 reasons: Congress printed paper money that was worthless. Many of the PA farmers were loyalists At Valley Forge the men had to build huts and had very little clothing and food. About 2,500 died from disease and exposure. Over the course of the encampment at Valley Forge, Baron von Steuben, a Prussian general, implemented a system of military training that enhanced fighting capacity of the Continental Army.
