For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14)

  10. Fellowship in the Local Church • Fellowship with God is conditional. • I John 1:5; I Peter 1:16 • Fellowship is bothvertical (between God & man) & horizontal (between Christians). • I John 1:3, 6; I John 1:7 • God controls fellowship. • Universal Church (Acts 2:47; I John 1:5-7) • Local Church (2 John 9-11; I Cor. 5:3-5)

  11. The Cost of Fellowship • In the Church - Revelation 2:23; 2:4-5 • Local Church Membership • A proper understanding and application of fellowship is crucial when it comes to local church membership. • Can I join myself to this local church? • Can the local church fellowship this person?

  12. Fellowship in the Local Church • Being rejected by a local church does not necessarily mean that one is lost. • The Jerusalem church and Saul stand as proof of this (Acts 9:26-28). • Diotrephes did not receive the apostle John and others, even casting some out of the church (3 John 9-10).

  14. Fellowship in the Local Church • Each local church must make careful judgments about those wanting to place membership. • Are they a member of the Lord’s Church (Acts 2:38, 41, 47)? • Is the couple scripturally married (Matt. 19:9)? • Do they hold to some false doctrine, such as the 70 AD doctrine (Romans 16:17; 2 John 10)? • Do they have a history of stirring up strife and discord among brethren (Titus 3:10-11)?

  15. Fellowship in the Local Church • Each local church must make careful judgments about those wanting to place membership. • Were they withdrawn from (2 Thess. 3:6) at another congregation? If so, why? • Were they previously a member of a liberal church of Christ? Repent (2 Cor. 7:10)? • Is it a member that fell away from the Lord, and desires to place their membership? Repent and seek forgiveness (Luke 15:18-19)?
