  2. Change Agents of Hope & Life Kingdom Significance of Trials 1 Peter 1:6-12

  3. Kingdom Significance of Trials Introduction • Vss. 1-12 – emphases of suffering and salvation • Trials • Persecution

  4. 1 Peter 1:6–7 (ESV)In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:6–9 (NLT) So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. 7These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

  5. Kingdom Significance of Trials Salvation’s Hope - Cause for Rejoicing • “In this” points back to vss. 3-5; the believer’s hope and inheritance. • Joy of Rejoicing

  6. Kingdom Significance of Trials In the Context of Trials though now for a little while,if necessary, you have been grieved by varioustrials 3 Characteristics of trials • Temporary • If necessary • Grievous

  7. Kingdom Significance of Trials In the Context of Trials 1. For a little while 1 Peter 5:10 (NLT) In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. 2 Corinthians 4:17–18 (NLT) For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

  8. Kingdom Significance of Trials In the Context of Trials 2. If necessary 1 Peter 1:7 (NLT) These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. . . . Lamentations 3:32–33 (NLT) Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love. 33 For he does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow.

  9. Kingdom Significance of Trials In the Context of Trials 3. Grievous 2 Corinthians 1:8–9 (NLT) . . . We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. 9 In fact, we expected to die. . . .

  10. Kingdom Significance of Trials Purpose in Trials vs. 7 1. Authenticate Faith Mark 4:15–20 (NLT) The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message, only to have Satan come at once and take it away. 16 The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. 17 But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. 18 The seed that fell among the thorns represents others who hear God’s word, 19 but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things, so no fruit is produced. 20 And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”

  11. Kingdom Significance of Trials Purpose in Trials vs. 7 2. Purge Faith Isaiah 48:10 (NLT) I have refined you, but not as silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in the furnace of suffering.

  12. Kingdom Significance of Trials Purpose in Trials vs. 7 2. Purge Faith • Pride, limitation of human capacity 2 Corinthians 12:7–10 (NLT) even though I have received such wonderful revelations from God. So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. . . . 9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. 10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  13. Kingdom Significance of Trials Purpose in Trials vs. 7 2. Purge Faith • Independence from God, self-sufficiency 2 Corinthians 1:8–9 (NLT) We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it. 9 In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

  14. Kingdom Significance of Trials Purpose in Trials vs. 7 2. Purge Faith • Jesus to be more evident 2 Corinthians 4:10–11 (NLT) Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. 11 Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies.

  15. Kingdom Significance of Trials Purpose in Trials vs. 7 2. Purge Faith • Live with eternal perspective 2 Corinthians 4:18 (NLT) So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Results in the Imperishable • Praise, Glory, Honor at Christ’s Return • “Words of life & honor” from Jesus John 12:26 (NLT) Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.

  18. 1 Peter 1:8–9 (NLT)You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. 9 The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. 1 Peter 1:8–9 (ESV)Though you have not seen him, you love him. 21. 1 Peter 1:10–12 (ESV)Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. 1 Peter 1:10–12 (NLT) This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. 11 They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward. 12 They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.

  23. Kingdom Significance of Trials How then Shall we Live? Kingdom Principle: “sufferings then glories follow” pattern of vs. 11 Illustrated - Joseph

  24. Kingdom Significance of Trials How then Shall we Live? • Testing is Connected with Design & Destiny. • The Lord tested Joseph’s character. Psalm 105:18-19 There in prison, they bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. Until the time came to fulfill his word, the Lord tested Joseph’s character.

  25. Kingdom Significance of Trials How then Shall we Live? 3. The Lord Accompanied Joseph’s Testing. Genesis 39:20-21 He took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held. But the Lord was with Joseph there, too, . . .

  26. Kingdom Significance of Trials How then Shall we Live? • The Lord Accompanied Joseph’s Testing. • The Lord Ushered Joseph into His Design & Destiny Genesis 41:50-52During this time, before the arrival of the first of the famine years, two sons were born to Joseph and his wife, . . . Joseph named his older son Manasseh, for he said, “God has made me forget all my troubles and the family of my father.” Joseph named his second son Ephraim, for he said, “God has made me fruitful in this land of my suffering.”

  27. Kingdom Significance of Trials How then Shall we Live? 5. The Lord Transformed Joseph’s Character & Faith Genesis 50:19–21 (NLT) — 19 But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. 21 No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children.” So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them.
