  3. Fun fact • There is now an ATM at McMurdo Station in Antarctica, which has a winter population of 200 people

  4. Why Care ?

  5. Brain storming • Time to do our Graphic Organizer !!!!!

  6. Why care ? • A new unit is dawning upon our class HUMAN GEOGRAPHY !!!!! • We are going to be doing some new vocabulary ex. Demography, immigration, emigrate, birth rate , death rate etc.

  7. See everything as a rate • Each of the following can measured as a rate: Birth rate Death rate Natural increase rate Immigration rate Emigration rate Migration rate Population growth rate All of these are measured in per 1000 people

  8. Definitions • Demography: it is the study of human population • Birth rate (BR): the number of births per year for every 1000 people • Death rate (DR): the number of deaths per year for every 1000 people • Immigration rate (IM): number of new Canadians who have come from another country per 1000 people • Emigration rate (EM): number of people who leave their country of origin. Number of people per 1000 people in one year who leave

  9. Natural increase rate (NIR) : it is the combination of birth rate and death rate. Can be calculated by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate Migration rate (MR) : the difference between people immigrating to a country and people emigrating from the same country

  10. Canadian context Number of births in Canada in 2003: 330 000 Population in Canada 2003: 32 207 000 BR = 330 000___ X 1000 = ? 32 207 000 BR= 10 per 1000

  11. MORE EH • How to calculate migration rate IM – EM MR = IM – EM = 7 per 1000 – 2 per 1000 = 5 per 1000

  12. Impact of population Growth • Population rate has drastically increased since 1800’s Doubling rate: the rate that a country needs to double Countries population
