  1. Trajectory Shaping for Safe Reentry of the Orbiter with TPS Damage Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure • Description Technologies and Capabilities • Quick response / real time trajectory design capability with distributive heating constraints. • Predicted temperature and heating as a function of trajectory developed from detailed aero / aerothermal database. • High fidelity computational fluid dynamics codes used to develop a database of detailed surface heating and temperature maps as a function of a Mach, Qbar, Alpha, Bank and Beta. • Create a quick response - real time - reentry trajectory optimization capability for designing trajectories that compensate for emerging TPS damage. • The trajectory design capability includes adjustable distributive temperature and heating constraints over the orbiter surface and the ability to optimize for variable alpha, bank and beta to achieve best case trajectories. • Automated process of modeling progressive compromises to the orbiter TPS system and executing trajectory optimization to produce a database of entry trajectories that protect specified compromised TPS systems. • Determine the level of survival damage to the TPS as a function of entry conditions and damage location. • An extended detailed low and high fidelity aerothermal solutions database developed to improve the characterization of Shuttle TPS flight conditions and TPS constraints. Benefits and Impacts Obsolescence Reduction Risk Reduction Safety Improvement Cost Reduction Process Improvement Other (Ultra-High Operations Improvement Reliability) Performance Enhancement • POC, Cost, Schedule and Maturity • TRL 7 by 2006 • POC: James Reuther (650-604-1516) • Quick response/real time trajectory design capability for emerging damage occurrences • Database of trajectories to protect various types of damage • Quantification of survivable TPS damage tolerance for Shuttle • Extended low and high fidelity aerothermal database of Shuttle surface conditions as a function of alpha, beta, Qbar and Mach • Reduction in Criticality 1 Failure Rate of 0.5%
