Area(s) of Significant Benefit Safety Performance Sustainability Operations Infrastructure Passive Millimeter Wave Imaging • Description • Millimeter wavelength visual inspection technique for pre-launch inspection of External Tank (ET) through insulating foam, requiring no electromagnetic energy illumination • Also provides clear imaging through the plume exhaust during launch • Non-intrusively improves the safety of the orbiter/SRBs/ET as launched • Operates through detecting natural emissions • Technologies and Capabilities • Detects separation of foam on ET and detects cracks in SRB fuel segments during assembly • Images in real-time (10 images/sec) during launch, even through SRM exhaust, since millimeter wavelengths are not obscured by either SRM exhaust particles or exhaust plasma • Requires no new development of sensor technologies, but re-uses technologies already developed for Homeland Security applications Benefits Obsolescence Reduction Risk Reduction Safety Improvement Cost Reduction Process Improvement Other Operations Improvement Performance Enhancement • Impacts and Maturity • TRL 6 • POC: Dr. Gary Bastin / Temel Erdogan; ASRC Aerospace.
