  4. Classroom Rules and Procedures We use the card system and positive reinforcement in our classroom. Green: Terrific Turtle Yellow: Good Blue: Warning/Time Out Red: Phone Call We can always use stickers!

Math News North Carolina Standard Course of Study North Carolina Department of Public Instruction The students do a lot of hands-on activities in math so you will not be seeing a lot of paperwork. First Quarter – number sense to 49 estimation patterns shapes (parallelograms, squares, trapeziods, hexagons)

  7. Math Homework • Monday and Tuesday nights- Math game • Wednesday night- Review problem • Thursday night- Thinking skill • Dice will be sent home for games

  8. Homework- teaches responsibility It needs to be a positive experience! Limit the time

  9. Balanced Literacy Instruction • Read Aloud – teacher reading teacher’s choice and children listen without a copy of the text. It exposes students to diverse texts and unique language. • Shared Reading – All the students have the same book. Students follow fluent reader voice. Shared reading builds a language pool. • Guided Reading – typically conducted with small groups of students (6 or less). Student reads text independently: teacher facilitates strategic reading. • Independent Reading – on reading level. Books are student chosen based on needs & interest. It represents an opportunity for extended time with connected texts and offers opportunities for developing extensive word banks.

  10. Phonics Program • Identify the number of sounds in a word- t o p • Word families- __at “r at”. • Substituting beginning sounds in a word – Take the “t” off of tan and add “m” to make man • Substituting ending sounds - Take the “n” off of fin and add a “t” to make fit.

  11. Take Home Reading/AR The children have a chance each morning to select a book of his/her choice. These books are found in the classroom and the library. Remember, your child is not too old to be read to. Read to your children as well as letting them read. It increases their reading level! They will become AR readers as they reach the appropriate reading level for AR. Your child will begin AR when we feel that he or she is ready! It is a huge responsibility and we want your child to feel success!

  12. Reading Comprehensionand Fluency • In order for a child to have good comprehension skills, they must be fluent readers. Fluency and comprehension go hand in hand. To improve fluency, read to your child and have them read orally on their level.

  13. Science • 1st Quarter – Ecosystems: Needs, behaviors and survival of living organisms • 2nd Quarter- Earth Systems – physical properties and use of Earth materials (rocks and soil) • 3rd Quarter – Earth in the universe, changes in the sky • 4th Quarter – Forces of motion

  14. Social Studies • 1st Quarter – Citizenship, Diverse people, families • 2nd Quarter – Change at home / world • Holidays and special days • 3rd Quarter –How geography helps us understand our world • 4th Quarter – How money works How technology and communication bring our world together

Assessments Spelling • Word Wall words • Invented spelling with correct beginning & ending sounds, later middle sounds Writing • Composes several sentences related to topic • Capital letters (beginning of sentence and names) • Spacing • Word wall words spelled correctly • Uses temporary spelling that can generally be read by others • Consistently uses end punctuation

Assessments Reading • Formal one-on-one reading of text and retell • DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) Fluent reading of sounds is assessed one-on-one and is timed. http://teachers.cr.k12.de.us/~galgano/dibel2.htm • Teacher Observation • STAR test – Computer adaptive test to determine reading level

Assessments(written and performance based) Math – First Quarter • Number sense- addition and subtraction to 10 (fluency to 5) & read and write numbers to 49. • Estimation to 25 • Collect, organize, and display data with line plots and tallies • Create, identify, and translate patterns • Problem solving using addition, subtraction, and fair shares
