  4. 4IInauguralIssue Introduction In1979,SirBillGammellfoundedCairn EnergyPLC,andthecompanywaslisted ontheLondonStockExchangein1988. SirBillGammellbecameitsfirstChief Executive.AstheIndianoilandgasmarket deregulatedintheearly1990s,Cairn’sfocus turnedtothisregion,whichresultedinthe acquisitionofCommandPetroleumLtd.in 1996,anAustralian-quotedcompanywith aninterestinSouthAsia.CairnEnergyPLC, aFTSE100companywasoneofthefirst UKcompaniestoinvestintheIndianoiland gassector.RavvaintheKrishna-Godavari Basinwasthefirstoffshoreoilandgas fieldtobedevelopedinpartnershipwith ONGC,VideoconandRavvaOil,where Cairnbecameoperatingpartnersfrom1996, workingunderaProductionSharingContract (PSC)until2019.Thiswasfollowedby theLakshmigasfieldinWesternIndiathat wasdiscoveredin2000,whicheventually commencedproductionin2002.InJanuary 2004,followingthelargestoildiscovery byanycompanyinIndiasince1985,the MangalaoilfieldinRajasthanwasadded toCairn’sassets.InDecember2006Cairn EnergyPLCannouncedthepricingforthe flotationofitsIndianbusiness,CairnIndia Ltd.throughtheInitialPublicOffering(IPO) ontheBombayStockExchangeandthe NationalStockExchangeofIndia.Currently CairnisoperatingasCairnIndiaLtd.,and theMangalafieldandotherdiscoveries inRajasthanareexpectedtocontribute significantlytotheenergysecurityofIndia. GovernanceStructure CairnIndiahasaninternalcontroland assuranceframeworkinplacewhichis closelyregulatedbytheCairnIndiaBoard. TheBoardisprovidedwithregularupdates onCSRperformancethroughtheCairnIndia CorporateAdvisoryBoard(CAB).Thereview iscarriedoutbyanindependentinternal departmentwhichreportstoCAB. CairnIndia’sVisionEncapsulatesCorporateSocialResponsibilityin3Rs RESPONSIBILITY CairnIndiaisoperatinginmanyareasthatface economic,socialandenvironmentalchallenges. Wehavearesponsibilitytounderstandthese challenges,identifythepotentialimpactofour activitiesand,throughengagingwithstakeholders, lookforopportunitieswheremutualbenefitis secured. RELATIONSHIPS Thesuccessofthecompanywouldnothave beenpossiblewithouttheconsistentsupportof allstakeholders,governments,regulatorsand JVpartners,tothelocalcommunitiesandthe administrationoftheregionsinwhichCairnIndia operates.   6. 6IInauguralIssue Intheyear2007,theCairnIFCLinkageProgrammewas Strideswetook establishedunderwhichthefollowingthreeprojectswere initiated,viz.EnterpriseCentre,MaternalChildHealth ProgrammeandDairyDevelopmentProgramme. Theyear2006markstheactualisationofauniqueprogrammecalled TIE(TheatreinEducation),whichwastakentoschoolslocatedin theruralareasofBarmer. ThesuccessoftheDairyDevelopmentProgrammeisevidentasinitially 1,96,876litresofmilkwasproducedunderthisinitiative;however todaytheproductioniscloseto25,00,000litres. TheChiefMinister ofRajasthanflagged offCairnIndia’s initiativetowards bettereducation; ScienceonWheels (MobileScience Van),intheyear 2010.

StridingAheadI7 RegionalHead-AdvisoryServices,IFCSouthAsia wasquotedappreciatingourinitiativeofCairn EnterpriseCentre:“Bycreatingopportunities andbuildingcapacitywhereneedsaregreatest, thisinitiativehasevolvedintoamodelfor promotinginclusiveeconomicgrowthinfrontier andremoteregions.Cairnhassetupanew benchmarktowardsSustainableCorporate ResponsivenessbyintegratingtheEnterprise Centrewithbusinessneedsandtheneedsof thelocalcommunityandenvironment.We complimentCairnontakingsuchapro-active andprofessionalroleinstandardsettingand communitydevelopment”,hesaid. EnterpriseCentrewas relaunchedasCairn EnterpriseCentrein May2011andhasbeen establishedasanon-profit organisation,registered undertheSocieties RegistrationAct,1860. Therewasa5yearMoU signedbetweenCairn IndiaandGovernmentof Rajasthanforcarryingon communitydevelopment programmesunderCEC. In2009,theMobileHealthVanprojectwaslaunchedinpartnership withHelpAgeIndiainBarmer.Presentlyatotalofthreemobilehealth vansareprovidinghealthcareservicesintheremotevillagesofBarmer. Improvedhealthstatusofthecommunitymembersissuccesstothe MHVProgramme;tilldateapproximately92,500peoplehavebeen benefitedthroughthisinitiative.

  8. 8IInauguralIssue Definingdestinations partnershipwithlocalauthorities,NGOsand otherorganisations.Atthenationallevel, socio-economicstudiesandstakeholder consultationsidentifyappropriateareasfor socialinvestment,whilstplansaredeveloped throughdiscussionatdistrictandcommunity levels. EconomicDevelopment TheobjectiveofCairn’sinitiativeineconomic developmentistocreateanenvironment (andinfrastructure)conducivetogenerating OurFocusareas CairnIndiaiscommittedtostrideahead toachievetheMillenniumDevelopment Goals(MDGs)throughvariouscommunity engagements.Itfocusesoninclusivegrowth byfosteringsocialcapitalthroughthehealth andeducationinitiativesandbycreating accesstoopportunitiesandresourcesthrough theeconomicdevelopmentandinfrastructure supportinitiatives.Theinitiativesaddto localbenefitsgeneratedthroughfocused socialinvestment.CairnIndia’scommunity developmentstrategiesaredesignedand implementedthroughconsultationand incomeearningopportunitiesthrough optimalusageofhumanresourcesforthe ScienceonWheelshelpingsustaininterestofyoungmindsatschools. targetcommunities,andtodevelop existenceofilliteracy.Thefocusthereforeis MSMEs(Micro,SmallandMedium Enterprises)forassumingtheroleof vendorswithlargeindustries(including ourown)comingupintheregion.Gender equalityandwomenempowerment arehumanrightsthatlieattheheartof developmentandachievementofMDGs. Education CairnIndiaaimsatenablinganenvironment forchildrenandyoungpeopletodevelop andevolveasresponsiblecitizen.Through thevariouseducationinitiatives,itfocuses onaccess,equityandqualityofeducation. Thecompanyrecognisestheimportanceof appropriateinfrastructure,skilledteachers, innovativeteachingmethodologyand curriculumavailabilityfortheschoolgoing childrenofthedistrict.Inadditiontothis,it alsobelievesininnovativemethodstomake learningmoreinteractiveandparticipatory. TheIndusValleyCivilisationwaspresentin partsofwhatisnowRajasthan.Theadventof meninRajasthancanclaimgreaterantiquity thanmanyotherregionsofIndia. It’sageologicalfactthattheAravallirangeof mountainslocatedacrossinRajasthanisolder thantheHimalayas.Thestateisknownforits vibranciesinitsfortsandpalaces;danceand music;paintingsandsculptures;theatreart andtemples.Rajasthanisthefourthhighest inattractingtouristsinIndiaasmanyold palacesandfortshavebeenconvertedinto heritagehotels.Inall,atrulyblessedstateof RajasthanistheheartofIndia’srichcultural byrailwaywithothercitiesofIndiaproviding itwithnewprovisionsofdevelopment.The locationofBarmer,whichisontheIndia- PakistanInternationalBorder,gothighlighted intenselyduringtheIndia-Pakistanwar in1965and1971.Thediscoveryofoil byCairnIndiaandothermineralshas broughtBarmerintovisibility.Despitenew industrialdevelopmentsitcontinuestobe afocalpointforitstraditionalart,culture, handicrafts,fairsandfestivals.Dyeingand hand-printingoftextiles,embroidery,jute products,woventextilesandwood-carving aresomeoftheuniquefeaturesofBarmer. Apartfromthedependenceonartand handicraftBarmerhashighdependence onagricultureandalliedactivitieswhichis heritage.Asperthecensus2011,population ofRajasthanstateis6.86crore.Thestatehas recorded21.44%growthinthelastdecade.As pertheprovisionalresultsofthecensus2011, aresultoflowagriculturalproducedueto aridland,heavydependenceonmonsoons, lowrateofgrowthoftheagriculturesector, sharpslowdowninthemanufacturing Womenempowermentby enhancingtheircraftsmenship Rajasthanhasrecorded8thhighestpopulation growthinIndia. Barmerdistrict,Cairn’soperationalarea,is locatedinthewesternregionofthestateand ispartoftheGreatIndianDesert–Thar.The totalpopulationofthedistrictisapproximately 26lakhs,asperGovernmentofIndiaCensus 2011.Theliteracyrateofthedistrictis57.49 withmaleliteracyratebeing72.32andfemale sectorandlowpercapitadevelopment expenditure,amongstmanyothers.Apart fromartandhandicraft,thefocusistowards maximumutilisationofthelargemineral depositsintheregion,whichiscurrently beingcarriedoutbyCairnIndiainasocially andenvironmentallyresponsiblemanner. Doingbusinessinasustainablemanneris fundamentaltoourlong-termsuccessand wearefocusedoncreatingvalueandmaking ourcommunitydevelopmentinitiatives.   14. 14IInauguralIssue CairnEnterpriseCentre,Barmer Meagreagriculturalproduction,seasonal migrationofyouthinsearchofjobs, lackofanymajorindustrialactivity,and comparativelyloweducationlevelshave resultedinverypooravailabilityofskilled andsemi-skilledmanpowerfromthelocal communityinBarmer.Lackofopportunities todevelopmanagerialskillsalsoresultedin mostmicro,smallandmediumenterprises (MSMEs)operatingatlowlevels.Thesewere themajorimpedimentsforlocalcommunities andMSMEsinparticipatingintheeconomic growthassociatedwiththedevelopment ofthehydrocarbondiscoveriesinthe region.Seeingtheabove,Cairnlaunched theEnterpriseCentre(EC)inJuly2007 andexpertiseonbusinesspracticesto localMSMEs,supportingthemtobecome potentialsuppliersandserviceproviders todifferentbusinessentities/contractors andotherupcomingventuresintheregion. TheECalsohelpedinthedisseminationof informationregardingcontracts,tenders andotherrelevantbusinessdocuments. FollowingweretheobjectivesofECduring itsoperations •Tradeskillexposureandenhanced employabilityforcommunitiesinthe BarmerDevelopmentAreathereby developingmicro,smallandmedium enterprises(MSMEs). inpartnershipwithInternationalFinance Corporation(IFC)foraninitialperiodofthree yearstoimprovetheeconomicstatusofthe •FacilitatingaccesstofinanceforSMEs andmicro-entrepreneurstoestablish andexpandbusinesses. StridingAheadI15 IntegratedCommunity Development ‘hands-on’and‘learning-by-doing’ experience.Duringitsoperationsinthefirst threeyearsECcreatedanicheforitselfin thestateandsetupauniquePublicPrivate Partnership(PPP)model,drivingbusiness growthandestablishinglinkageswiththe localcommunities.Seeingthesuccess oftheECduringthefirstphase;itwas envisagedtoextendthemodelforanother fiveyearsundertheaegisofaNot-for-Profit organisationCairnEnterpriseCentre(CEC) registeredunderSocietiesRegistrationAct, 1860inpartnershipwithGovernmentof Rajasthan.AnMoUhasbeensignedbetween CEC:Intervention CECandGovernmentofRajasthantotake theprojectfurtherforthenextfiveyears. DuringitstermtheCECwillfocusoncutting edgetrainingsolutionsthathaveanindustry linkage,andhence,chancesofgreater employabilityforthestudents. TheCECwillhaveamodularapproach andwilldelivermodulesthatarehighly specialisedandcomplementtheexisting trainingsetup.WithinthistheCECwillbegin withspecialisedtrainingonwelding.The specialisedtrainingwillbeginbyusingthe existingfacilitiesatITI,Barmerandwillbe institutionalisedbycreatingspecialfacilities attheCEC,withinthenextoneyear.While theweldingtrainingisbeinginstitutionalised, Cairnwillbeginthepilotphaseofthesecond specialisedtrainingoninstallationand maintenanceofpumpsandvalves. CECisalsostrengtheningtheexisting programmeportfoliocurrentlyofferedatthe ITIbyaddingthesoftskillcomponenttothe existingITIcurriculum.Thesetrainingswill includemodulesonbasiccomputerliteracy, spokenEnglishandbasicmanagement/ entrepreneurshipskills. TheschoolsareaffiliatedtotheGujarat SecondaryandHigherSecondaryEducation ofOpenSchooling(NIOS).Gujaratior Englisharetheusuallanguagesofinstruction. Thegovernment-runpublicschoolslack manyfacilities,butaretheonlyoptionfor poorerresidentswhocannotaffordthe moreexpensiveprivateschools.Asperthe censusof2011,theliteracyrateoftheSurat is86.65%,whichisconsiderablyhigherthan thenationalaverageof74.04%.Themale literacyrateis91.5%whilethefemaleliteracy rateis81.02%.However,schoolenrolment isstilllowandthedropoutrateafter7th gradeisconsiderablyhigh.Inadditiontothis, undernourishmentandanaemiaisprevalent inthedistrictwith38%ofthechildrenbeing Board(GSEB),theCentralBoardfor SecondaryEducation(CBSE);andfew underweightand10%ofthemseverely undernourished. Theprojectcaterstotheneedofthe farmers’requirementaswellasbuilding awarenessonincreasingtheirproductivity andobtainingfairpricefortheircrop.With thispremise,CairnispartneringwithMulti CommodityExchange(MCX)andIndiaPosts withprofitsandcommissionreceivedbythe coordinatorsaswellasDepartmentofPost throughsaleandpurchaseofagri-commodity. StridingAheadI19 SriLanka ThepearloftheIndianOcean–SriLanka, hasoneofitsfirstwrittenreferencesfound intheIndianepic–Ramayana.Today,Sri Lankaisoneofthemostsoughtaftertourist destinationsinSouthAsia.SriLankahasan educationsystemwhichdictates9years ofcompulsoryschoolingforeverychild. However,lackofresponsivenessofthe educationsystemtothelabormarket requirements,disparitiesinaccessto qualityeducation,lackofaneffective linkagebetweensecondaryandtertiary educationremainmajorchallengesforthe educationsector. SinceCairnhasobtainedacreagefor explorationinSriLanka,aspartof Company’ssocialcommitment,Cairn isproactivelyinitiatingCSRactivities whichwilladdvaluetotheeffortsofthe Governmentaswellassupplementthe communityneedsinthisaspect.‘Education’ beingoneoftheprimefocusareas,Cairn hastakenthelibraryinitiativetoSriLanka. ThedataincludestrainingsofvariouskindsandformatsincludingEmploymentProgrammes,SemiSkills Programmes,SelfEmploymentProgrammes,SMEProgrammesandGeneralprogrammes.Atanoveralllevel, thetrainingsimpartedbyCairnEnterpriseCentrehavereceivedapositivefeedbackfromthetraineesbothin termsofdesignanddelivery.Withrespecttothedatainthefig,91%traineessuggestthattheyrecommendthe programmestoothersandmorethan70%ofthemindicatethatthetrainingshavecontributedinenhancingtheir personality. SelfEmploymentProgramme Gyani,asimplewomanfromaremotevillage ofKawasistheshiningstarofherfamilyand intheleagueofsuccessfulentrepreneurs aroundthevillage.Seenasasymbolof strengthandcourageinhervillage,Gyani recallsthatlifewascompletelyopposite before,anddidn’tseemtohaveanymeaning forherwhenshelosthertwoyearold childduetoillness.Shewasinastateof traumaafterthetragedyanddidn’tknow howtomoveon.Forafamilyofdailywage earnersmostoftheirearningshadgone inthetreatmentofthechildandthisleft themindrudgeryandpoverty.Itwasthen thatGyaniluckilycametoknowaboutthe SelfEmploymentProgrammebeingrunat theCairnEnterpriseCentre.Shejoinedthe programmeanditgaveheragood scopetofocusherattentionandhitupon anewmissioninherlife.Gyaniknewthat itwasheronlychanceandshestarted attendingthetraining.Inthreemonthsshe completedthesessionandwasconfident ofherhandicraftskills.Shebeganspending twotothreehoursdaily,andsoonstarted earningclosetoINR1000permonth.Itwas thislifechangingmomentinGyani’slife whichmadeherbelievethatshecanmake adifference.Shesoonjoinedtheadditional courseinkeychainmakingorganisedatCEC forsupplementingherincome.Forthefirst timeinherlife,Gyanistartedbelievingin herself!Afterexcellinginboththetrades, hermonthlyincomedoubledtoINR2000per month.Todaysheisrespectedbyherfamily andthecommunity,asshemanagedtohelp herfamilysurvivethroughthecrisis. EmploymentProgramme– TraininginSolarLampRepairing LifewouldneverbethesameforMagaram, aresidentofMadpuraBarwalavillage. Todayheisoneofthemostsuccessful businessmeninthearea,includingvillages surroundinghis.Andthismassivechange inhislifehappenedoverjust6months. Magaramrecalls,thatearlierhewasjust anordinarytailorinhisvillage,earning littlewhichwasnotsufficienttomeet thedailyneedsofhis6memberfamily. ButMagaramhadadream;hewantedto providethebeststandardofeducationto hischildren.Hethoughtthisdreamwould alwaysremainadreamuntilhecameto knowabouttheprogrammesinCEC.It allstartedwithathreeweektraininghe underwentattheCEC.Thetrainingwas initiated,assolarlampswerepopularin thesevillages;duetopaucityofpermanent electricconnections.However,the problemwasmaintenanceandrepairing oftheselampsastherewasnorepairman orservicecentreforthesame.Everytime thevillagershadtotravellongdistances togettheirlampsrepaired.Magaram usedthistrainingtolearnrepairingof theselamps,ashewasinformedbyCairn thatthiscouldyieldhimgoodresults inthefuture.Duringthetraining,he cameintouchwithrepresentativesfrom PegasusSolarTechnologyCompanyand wasofferedtobetheirdistributorinthe area.PegasusSolarTechnologyoffered himINR150commissiononsaleofevery solarlampandasMagaramwasalreadya trainedservicemanhestartedgettingINR 150extrafortakingcareofservicingofthe lamps.Magaramtookthisprojectandsoon peopleinandaroundthevillagebegan toseekhisservices.Heattainedsuccess andisstillknownamongstthevillagersas afamousandsuperiorsalesman.Today Magaramsellsaround30lampspermonth earninguptoINR9000ascommissionand formaintenanceinadditiontohisrepairing businesswhichbenefitshimimmensely. HenowearnsasmuchasINR15,000per monthandhisdreamofgivingquality educationtohischildrenisnomorejust adream.
