2. Thank you for attending our school this evening! In an effort to improve our communication with parents we have a very brief survey we would like you to fill out. Teachers should have handed you the half sheet of paper for you to answer some very brief questions. We will repeat this survey in the spring!

20. You have probably heard about the Common Core State Standards... The staff at JB Nelson has started the process of examining these standards for learning. This year we are beginning the transition to teaching these more rigorous standards in literacy and mathematics.

21. What About Growth? Are ALL students (below, at, or above grade level) showing growth? Reading: Grades 2-5- 67.49% are meeting their growth target When compared to the national average- 94% Math: Grades 2-5- 66.87% are meeting their growth target When compared to the national average- 77%

22. JB Nelson Goals for school improvement in 2013-14... We will be focused on increasing the percentage of students meeting and exceeding on grade level benchmark tests AND increasing the percentage of students meeting their growth targets.

A Little About Me… • I went through Batavia Public Schools. • I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a middle school endorsement from Western Illinois University. • I received a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University. • Over my eight years of teaching, I have taught 4th grade, 1st grade, K-5 Spanish, Elementary ELL, and now 5th grade.

28. Homework and Assignments • Should be recorded daily in assignment notebooks • 45 minutes or less to complete. • If there is a situation at home that would prevent your child from completing an assignment(s) for the evening: • a note (or email) is required by the parent or guardian • turned in instead of the assignment • will allow your child to ask for additional help if needed, and/or turn in the assignment the next day without penalty (late slip).

29. Homework and Assignments cont. • Late assignment = Late slip • This is to be signed by a parent or guardian and turned in with the assignment the next school day. I’ll keep the carbon copy so I can be sure to check in with your child the next day • Three in a trimester is a pattern of concern. A parent contact will be made. • Six in a trimester means we didn’t solve the issue the first time. A parent, teacher, student conference will be set up.

30. Parent communication • Communication is key! • Take-Home Folders • Please check nightly • I will use group emails and the classroom website to keep parents informed about classroom happenings.

31. Discipline/PBIS • 3 B’s of JBN • BE…Safe / Responsible / Respectful • Reinforcing the good choices that students make • Tickets • “Clip-ups” • Disruptive, harmful, or non-productive behaviors: • Clip down (Broken B form or call home) • Green and Gold sheets

32. Band and Orchestra • Schedule will rotate throughout the year • Lessons are 30 minutes long. • Students are required to complete any assignments given by the due date. • Students need to have an in class buddy to take notes on what information was covered while they were at lessons. • Students need to seek out teacher assistance for any information they do not understand that might have been covered during their lesson. • Appropriate times for this might be during recess, before and after school. • Morning rehearsals: • Wednesdays at JBN for orchestra • Thursdays at JBN for band.

33. Math • Journal pages and/or Study Links are usually used for homework. • There will be math homework most nights. • There will be a review prior to the post test for each unit. • There will also be website reviews available for your use at home. • Students will be placed in a group that best supports their learning needs. • All groups cover secure skills from the curriculum.

34. Math Placement • Students who completed the fifth grade math curriculum last year are now working on sixth grade math with Mrs. Allen. • 4th grade Spring MAP scores were then used to group the remaining fifth grade students. • This data was used as a starting point to group students. • We will continually reassess groups as we gather more data throughout the year. • MAP • Classroom performance • Work ethic • Math groups are flexible and may change throughout the year.

35. Reading • Balanced literacy framework • reading, writing, listening, speaking • Reading strategies will be modeled and reinforced • read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. • Independent Reading : • Read a variety of genres • Good fit books

36. Reading Placement • Your child will be placed in a guided reading group based on reading assessment data and their reading needs. • All guided reading groups will meet with a teacher at least once a week. • The instruction in each guided reading group will be based on student need. • Reading groups are flexible and may change throughout the year.

37. Writing • Being a Writer • combines the writing process approach with guided instruction • 5th Grade genre units: • Writing Community, Writing Process, Personal Narrative, Fiction, Non-fiction, Persuasive, and Poetry.

38. Social Studies • History Alive • USA’s History • Tests will be given after many of the units. • Utilize the History Alive website to study for tests • Interactive Lessons • VERY DIFFICULT to make-up activities

39. Science • Our science units: • Living Systems • Food and Nutrition • Models and Designs • Landforms • Robert Crown (“Michael” Program/ “Linda” Program) • There will be an informational meeting for parents to be announced at a later date • Science experiments will not be made up if your child is absent. Talking to a friend to get missing information is a great way to stay caught up.

40. Food • Snacks • healthy and neat. • Birthday Treats • No food items (per district policy) • The children are welcome to celebrate their birthday by donating a book to the LRC or classroom library. The students could also bring in a non-edible item for the class.

41. Conferences • Conferences will be held during the weeks of 11/4 – 11/15. • This year, through reflection on tests and projects, your child will focus on understanding their own learning • Your child will need to be involved in the conference so he/she can share their insights and areas for improvement. • Sign up sheets for conference times are available tonight.
