The Who, Why and How of Mission Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus appears! (Matthew 28:16-17) • Jesus’ supreme authority (Matthew 28:18) • Jesus sends out his disciples (Matthew 28:19-20)

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. (Mat 28:16-17 NIV)

Matthew 28:10 (NIV) 10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Matthew 14:25-33 (NIV) 25 During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.” 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

Matthew 14:25-33 (cont.) 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?” 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

Colossians 1:15-18 (NIV) 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

The authority of Jesus dispels the disciples’ doubt about Jesus’ identity. The authority of Jesus shapes who we are and what we do as his followers

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples (Mat 28:18-19 NIV)

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Mat 28:19-20a NIV)

Isaiah 49:6 (NIV) "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."
