Programme 25 – 26 September: Workshop on Objectives and Methods of Plasma Turbulence Studies - 6 introductory lectures - 10 participant’s presentations Main goals of the Joint experiment have been formulated and discussed. 27 - 28 September: Work in groups, introduction to T-10 facilities Experimental plans, scenarios of the discharges, aviability of diagnostics and data access have been discussed. 29 September – 4 October: experiments 5 experimental sessions have been carried out 5 - 6 October: discussions in groups and overall discussions Results of experiments and future plans of joint analysis of the data have been presented in the reports of Task Leaders

  6. Scientific Programme of the 2nd JE The experiment has been performed within 4 working groups: 1. Core turbulence investigations with correlation reflectometry. 2 exp. Sessions. Key person – Dr. Vladimir Vershkov 2. Studies of plasma potential fluctuations and radial electric field with HIBP diagnostics. 2 exp. Sessions. Key person – Dr. Alexander Melnikov 3. Edge turbulence investigations with the electric probe technique. 1 exp. Session. Measurements for electrostatic probes have not been completed due to electrical problems and it was not possible to repeat the session. Key persons – Dr. Gennady Kirnev/Dr. Viacheslav Budaev 4. Remote experiment, unification of data access Key person – Dr. Mikhail Sokolov

Main achievements and outputs of JE-2 • Opportunity to participate in T-10 experiments within international team was highly rated by most participants • Discussions with experts in major topics, knowledge and expertise exchange, exchange of information about domestic experiments and analysis tools, establishment of new links and collaborations. • Good organisation of experiment: • Full support and attention of the Host Institution management, which resulted in: • Tokamak and diagnostics readiness • well-prepared experimental daily plans • good group leadership with distribution of functions between group members - excellent team work • good organisation of daily operations, information on machine and diagnostics status, group leaders briefings before and after experiment. Workshop at the beginning was a good idea. • clear distribution of post-experiment tasks on data analysis, preparation of presentations and publications • brief reports prepared in short terms • well-organised accommodation, transport and social activities • 4. Scientific output expected to be valuable, broad and immanent.

  8. Main achievements and outputs of JE-2 Results of the Joint Experiments can be briefly summarized in the following way: 1. Five topics have been proposed for the future analysis of the data: a) poloidal asymmetry of the turbulence (Leader – V. Vershkov); b) comparison of the ExB shearing rate and turbulence rotation (Leader – V. Vershkov); c) investigation of GAMs (Leader – A. Melnikov); d) Intermittency in edge turbulence of tokamaks: inter-machine analysis of statistics and scale invariance (Leaders – V. Budaev, G. Kirnev); e) The unification of access to experimental data of fusion devices (Leader – M. Sokolov). 2. Data base for the investigations in frames of the topics mentioned above has been prepared;

  10. Main lessons from JE-2 and ideas arisen during the experiment 1. Some problems with data access at the beginning, poor documentation. (Fixed by the end of experiment on T-10). 2. Log book with easy access and visible in control room, etc. - to bring medium/large tokamak culture to small tokamak community (also preparation for ITER) - this may be a criterium/request for next JEs 3. More information prior and after experiment – briefings, reports, tokamak parameters and regimes, list of available diagnostics. A section in training in the machine operation and data access should preceed experiment. 4. List of participants should be available at the start of experiment. 5. Communication skills of key persons should be sufficient. 6. Proposals and suggestions for better organisation of future JEs. Formulate criteria for suitability of the host. 7. Better timing of JE, link to the local and international constrains. 8. More information on CRP during JE. Preprints, reports. 9. Remote participation in experiment, remote data access, video-conferences etc. (There was no clear what output expected from the remote access activities).

Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment • Next JE should be logical continuation of the first two • Next JE should maximum use experience of previous experiments • It should be a step forward and sustain achieved high quality • It should add some new scope to the JE and bring new ideas, not just repeat what was done at different tokamak

Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment • First JE at CASTOR: • main achievement is that we started the process • also: • - good tokamak availability and infrastructure • - good team work • Scientific output was moderate (one publication, several presentations, one paper in preparation) and analysis was delayed

Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment • Second JE at T-10: • main achievement - valuable scientific results during experiment (more publications and presentations expected) • also: • - good tokamak availability and infrastructure • - good team work, more narrow specialisation • - experience from work on medium-size tokamak, in particular for non-experts

Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment Third Joint Experiment Two suggestions: Joint Experiment on TCABR and ETE, Brazil - network of 2 (or 3) tokamaks - joint workshop, then work in groups at different sites (100km), then concluding discussions Joint Experiment on ISTTOK tokamak, Portugal - 2-day workshop, then - training on tokamak operation, diagnostics, tools, remote participation and remote data access - then remote participation in ISTTOK experiment from home laboratory and remote concluding workshop Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment Third Joint Experiment Two suggestions: Joint Experiment on TCABR and ETE, Brazil - network of 2 (or 3) tokamaks - joint workshop, then work in groups at different sites (100km), then concluding discussions

Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment • 1st JE at CASTOR: first attempt, experience, training in tokamak operation and diagnostics, team work, 1 publication • 2nd JE at T-10: extended programme, team work on medium-size tokamak (closer to big tokamak environment), more scientific results obtained during experiment, more publications expected

Proposals and ideas for the next Joint Experiment • 3rd JE, • if in Brazil: network of several tokamaks, co-ordination of similar experiments (parallel experiment), immediate comparison of results and discussions. But need to work out what common experiments to be performed – discussions needed • These experiments will demonstrate network exploitation and also possibility of smaller-scale JEs under IAEA umbrella if at ISTTOK: main results to be obtained not during JE at Lisbon, but afterwards, via remote participation. But need good experimental programme, diagnostics, data access – discussions needed Remote Participation development is urgently requested by Fusion Programme (as discussed at Vienna this Spring)
