  2. What was the Protestant Reformation? • Was the name given to a religious and political development in the early 16th century • This reformation was led by Martin Luther and various other reformers

  3. The Great Schism • Refers to two major events in history of Christianity • These events were the division between the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Roman Catholic) Churches • The other event was the period of time (1378-1417) where the Roman Catholic (Western) Church had two and later three, lines of popes

  4. The Eastern Schism • The first permanent severing of the Christian community (1054) • Divisions between the Eastern Orthodox and Western Roman Catholic Churches date back to the division of the Roman Empire at the end of the 3rd century • One of the fundamental differences between them was the Petrine Doctrine • Other issues were the celibacy of the priesthood, use of unleavened bread in the Eucharist, and bishops controlling the sacrament of confirmation

  5. The Petrine Doctrine • Based upon Catholic tradition, it declares the supremacy of the pope over all bishops in the Catholic Church • This arose doubts between both sides • The Council of Ephesus in 431 offers debate to whether the pope or a council of bishops should lead the Church • The Petrine Doctrine was absolute in the West, but resisted in the East

  6. The Western Schism • began after the death of Pope Gregory XI in March 1378 • The cardinals elected Pope Urban VI, which turned out to be a bad choice • He was unruly and cruel, and refused to resign • The Church was divided by the Great Schism, in which rival popes claimed authority • These popes were recognized as antipopes • The Western Schism was resolved in 1417 when a group of Church leaders met to discuss Church unity • They elected Martin V as the one pope to reunite the papacy

  7. Protestantism • By the 16th century, a number of priests tried to get Christianity back to its earlier simplicity and biblical basis (due to its corruption by this time) • Major reformers that began the development of the three distinct branches of Protestantism were Martin Luther, Ulrich (or Huldreich) Zwingli, John Calvin and John Knox.

  8. Branches of Protestantism • The major branches of Protestantism were: • Anglican Communion, • Baptist • Congregational , • Episcopal , • Evangelical , • Fundamentalist , • Lutheran   • Mennonite   • Methodist   • Moravian   • Pentecostal   • Presbyterian   • Quaker
