  1. HomeFront April 2012 The Official Publication of the Home Builders Association Manatee-Sarasota at Executive Board Greetings HBA Members… President: Michael Rego, John Cannon Homes HBA – LWRBA – GCBX Legislative Wrap Up Luncheon Recap What a year it has been for the Florida Legislature! Members of the HBA Manatee-Sarasota, Gulfcoast Builders Exchange and Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance turned out to the Polo Grill on April 12th to hear Rep. Greg Steube, Rep. Jim Boyd, Rep. Ray Pilon, Sen. Mike Bennett and lobbyist David Ramba give their recap of what was accomplished during the recent legislative session and what they hope to accomplish next time. Rep. Ray Pilon, whose district includes much of Sarasota County, emphasized the need from input from the business community. “We really need your input in order to know your particular issues,” he said. 1st Vice President: David Hunihan, Neal Communities 2nd Vice President: Melissa Shapiro, Bradenton Herald Treasurer: Jaclyn Ohman, Baron Construction Secretary: Drew Smith, Two Trails During this last session, legislation to penalize unlicensed contractors was removed from a bill after House staff argued that it could be interpreted as a fee increase. However, Rep. Jim Boyd encouraged the HBA and building community to continue lobbying for the legislation, saying that he and our other local representatives would be willing to look at it again this year. Immediate Past President: Mike Kramer, John Neal Homes Immediate 2nd Vice President: Missy Weishaar, Waste Management Executive Vice President: Alan Anderson, HBAMS Upcoming Events 34th Annual SEBC Readies Builders To Speed Up Construction Rebound ~ July 26-28, 2012 4/18 Associate & Trades Council 4/19 Remodelers Council, Manatee GA Committee 4/20 BRAG Breakfast – Hosted by Vision Group & Arthur Rutenberg/Nelson Homes 4/26 Membership Committee 4/27 Networking Breakfast Hosted by Florida Builder Appliances 4/28 YBN at Sports Fest in St. Petersburg 5/4 Annual Spring Fling Golf Tournament The question that the Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) is posing to its 2012 attendees is “Are You Ready?” That’s because this year’s SEBC -- presented by the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) – will prepare builders and allied professionals to take full advantage of the housing/construction industry recovery. “The housing rebound is well underway in the Southeast,” says West Palm Beach builder Ray Puzzitiello, who co-chairs the SEBC along with Orlando real estate specialist Tony Martin of Wells Fargo. “The SEBC is all about education, exhibits and networking that will empower builders and associates to build momentum in an improving market.” Now in its 34th year, the SEBC is the largest regional building industry trade show in the South, owing its success to world-class seminars presented by some of the industry’s top experts, knowledgeable exhibitors anxious to share news of products and services, and valuable business-to-business and peer-to-peer interaction. To reserve exhibit space at SEBC, contact Vice President of Exposition Management Lynne Edwards at 800-261-9447, ext. 109 or e-mail her at ledwards@fhba.com. 2. Hot Topic: Curbing Unlicensed & Unpermitted Work Making progress with the help of local agencies. The HBA’s Remodelers Council met in February and brought together representatives of the local chapters of the HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical and Pool & Spa Associations and the GCBX, along with the directors of Planning and Development for Manatee and Sarasota counties, several building officials, code enforcement officers, the Sarasota Sheriffs Office, the State Attorney’s Office, and other industry professionals to discuss strategy on the unlicensed and unpermitted work going on in our two counties. Our Future Builders of America (FBA) at the International Builders Show in Orlando in February. This meeting was extremely successful and served as a catalyst in uniting “shareholders” of the industry to work together in curbing this dangerous activity. In the near future, we expect to be able to provide a single-source database listing all offenders in order to be more proactive in reporting suspected unlicensed activity to code enforcement.
