  2. at Hot Topic: Curbing Unlicensed & Unpermitted Work! Protect yourself and others! The HBA is currently involved in promoting the local efforts of our Remodelers Council and Manatee and Sarasota County Building Departments, who have partnered with FHBA, BOAF and CLOAF at the state level to help curb the unlicensed and unpermitted work currently going on in our community. The work by these unlicensed contractors is truly a LIFE & SAFTEY issue that leaves the home owner liable for all the costs -- including fines, multiple permit fees, and in some cases loss of reimbursement of insurance claims -- when submitted for damages. Everyone can help by reporting any activity that you suspect is being done by unlicensed contractors or unpermitted workers. Report suspicious activity: Sarasota County: 941-861-5000 Manatee County: 941-742-5800 DPBR in Tallahassee: 1-866-532-1440 Check out new photos of the YBN’s Duffer’s Open Who is in your circle of influence? This year, Bill Smock, Bud Swindell, Mike Rahn, Mark Hawkins and Alan Anderson made the trip. They attended a legislative reception at the FHBA Housing Center on January 24th, where a few of our state representatives stopped by. Rep. Jim Boyd, District 68, spoke with us about the priorities for the HBA and FHBA and we asked that he support us on them. Earlier in the day, we met with Gov. Rick Scott and a large group of state directors from around Florida in the City of Tallahassee Commission Chambers. The governor spoke for about 20 minutes and touched on a Bill Smock at FHBA Legislative Day in Tallahassee couple of housing issues; he mentioned the various pockets of positive new home construction, highlighting the efforts of Neal Communities here in Manatee and Sarasota Counties. He also encouraged all those present to continue to meet with our legislators, inform them of the issues and stay involved in the process.
