Overview • The structure of UK Higher Education courses, modules and programmes: • National Qualifications Framework • Benchmark Statement • Programme Specification • Linking teaching and research • Putting it together • Sharing ideas
National Qualifications Framework • From the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA): • The framework for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (FHEQ) (2nd ed. Aug 2008) • The framework for qualifications of higher education institutions in Scotland • “The frameworks for higher education qualifications describe the achievement represented by higher education qualifications. They apply to degrees, diplomas, certificates and other academic awards granted by a higher education provider with degree awarding powers.” • http://www.qaa.ac.uk
Benchmark Statement(s) • “Subject benchmark statements set out expectations about standards of degrees in a range of subject areas. They describe what gives a discipline its coherence and identity, and define what can be expected of a graduate in terms of the abilities and skills needed to develop understanding or competence in the subject.”
