  2. All About Me • Background • attended St. Rose of Lima School, Our Lady of Mercy Academy, GCC, & Rowan University (2007) • BA in Elementary Education • BA in Writing Arts/Communication • Experience • 5th year of teaching • taught 1st & 2nd grade

  3. My Goals • To give my students the academic and social skills needed to progress to 2ndgrade • To provide a supportive and fun environment conducive to learning • To help my students make new friends and discover new interests

  4. Curriculum • The curriculum of first grade is as follows: • Language Arts (reading, spelling, writing) • Math • Religion • Science • Social studies • Specials: Physical Education, Music, Art, Spanish, Library

  5. Language Arts • Students will understand and apply knowledge of letters, sounds , and words to become independent /fluent readers • Students will read with fluency and comprehension • Students will write in clear, concise language • Students will speak in clear and concise language • Students will listen actively to information

  6. Math • Students will develop number sense and an ability to represent numbers in a variety of forms • Students will develop spatial sense and the ability to use geometric properties, relationships, and measurement to model and describe • Students will be able to represent, analyze, and solve problems • Students will develop an understanding of Data Analysis and Probability

  7. Science • Physical Science - Matter - Energy : light, heat, and sound; motion, machines, and magnets; electricity • Earth Science - Exploring space – day and night; phases of the moon; solar system - Exploring physical features of the Earth – land, water, air • Life Science • Plants (growth cycle, differences) • Animals (characteristics, groups, basic needs) • Human Body (senses, stages of growth, functions) • Ecology (living things – homes and needs, long ago, extinction)

  8. Social Studies • School - Home and School - Rules • Community - Neighborhood - Different types of communities - Laws and leaders - Home in relation to the world • Work - jobs - needs and wants - saving and spending

Social Studies • Earth and Resources - weather - land and water - farm history - caring for our resources • Our Country - Native Americans - Early Travelers to America - The Colonies Become Free - Symbols (American Flag) - holidays - Choosing our leaders • Our World - Change over time - inventors and inventions - travel - life around the world

  10. Religion • Students will understand God’s loving plan of goodness • Students will demonstrate a creedal understanding of The Blessed Trinity • Students will understand the Church as a community of faith building God’s kingdom • Students will identify the seven sacraments • Students will make moral decisions based on the Gospel (Bible) • Students will learn a variety of prayers to express a relationship with God • Students will celebrate liturgical feasts and seasons • Students will grow in a life-long relationship with God through the gift of faith

  11. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Some of our class rules are: • Work quietly and do not disturb others • Listen while others are speaking • Be truthful and honest • Be prepared for class

  12. Homework • The three MUSTS: • Pencil ONLY • Neatness • Follow directions • Homework will be given EVERY night (except for Friday). • If homework is not complete, it will be sent home the next night along with that night’s assignments.

  13. Specials • Monday – Spanish & Gym • Tuesday – Music • Wednesday – Library • Thursday - Art

  14. Tests • Tests WILL be announced in advance. • Students will be tested in ALL subject areas

  15. *Important* • Change in transportation… ~note, e-mail, OR call office • Money --- envelope with child’s name! • Daily Lunch Order ---- envelope with order written! • School clothing ----- name! • Yellow Teacher/Parent folder • Notes, Tests

  16. Mass Attendance • About 2x’s per month our class will attend mass at St. Padre Pio. • It is important for the children to attend mass outside of school as well. The result is increased participation!

  17. Tardiness • School starts at 8:25 A.M. • If students are notin the classroom by the time the bell rings, they WILL be marked late.

  18. Field Trip • Spring Field Trip - TBA
