  2. What is a Nonsense Word? A nonsense word is a word that has no meaning. * Silverstein, S. (2006). Runny babbit. New York: Harper Collins Publisher.

  3. Why is Nonsense Words Important? In order to read nonsense words, the student has to know the most common sounds for letters along with how to blend the sounds to create or read words that they may never have seen before.

  4. DIBELS The most common standardized test that assesses nonsense word fluency is DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). DIBELS describes Nonsense Words as “letter-sound correspondence in which letters represent their most common sounds and of the ability to blend letters into words in which letters represent their most common sounds”

  5. Some examples of nonsense words that DIBELS uses on their assessments are: • boj • sim • uk • bod • naf • kej • rit • jul • bec • waz

  7. “If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?”
