  2. “Let the “socialist” snivellers croak, let the bourgeoisie rage and fume, but only people who shut their eyes so as not to see, and stuff their ears so as not to hear, can fail to notice that all over the world the birth pangs of the old, capitalist society, which is pregnant with socialism, have begun” Lenin

  3. Vladimir Lenin gained political popularity with the people. He wanted Russia out of WWI and wanted government to focus on meeting the needs of the people. Campaigned on “Land, Peace, Bread”

  4. -Lenin and Leon Trotsky successfully established a new Marxist style of government which later became known as Leninism.

  5. Leninism: an interpretation of communism created by Lenin, which still called for revolution, but then through authoritarian governance by the communist party. • Bolsheviks: members of the Russian Social-Democratic Workers Party, led by Lenin which would later become the Communist Party.

  6. Many people did not agree with Lenin, civil war broke out between the Reds (Soviets) and the Whites (liberal democrats) , assassination attempts were made on Lenin’s life

  7. Red Terror • Lenin authorised the shooting of 25 Tsarist ministers, civil servants, and 765 White Guards in September 1918 • -70 000 people went to labour camps

  9. By 1922 Lenin had consolidated his power as Leader and with several republics joining became the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialism Republics) or known as the Soviet Union

  10. During this time the people of Russia experienced: 1.) Land was redistributed to the people 2.) Factories were given to the workers and could make decisions about wages and working conditions 3.) Men and women were considered equal and valuable contributors to society 4.) Art and music flourished as there were no longer restrictions on what people could create.

  11. Joseph Stalin After Lenin’s death, a struggle for power took place b/w Trotsky and Stalin. Trotsky’s political beliefs were similar to Lenin’s. By 1928, Stalin emerged as the new leader of USSR. Stalin had Trotsky exiled and assassinated

  12. Stalinism Stalin’s interpretation of Marxist ideas included himself as an absolute ruler. His policies usually involved fear and oppression rather than revolution and freedom. He rejected all liberal values. He turned USSR into a dictatorship. Millions would die under his rule.
