  3. Our Mission Statement Through an education rooted in technology-based applications, CAST prepares students to become successful professionals within a global society. MS Human Resource Development • 12 classes/48 quarter credit hours • Components of the curriculum: • Required - 3 courses, 8 credits total • Core – 5 courses, 20 credits • Electives – 4 courses, 16 credits. Any HRD elective or approved graduate level course (700 or 800 level courses) • Comprehensive Exam – 2 courses, 4 credits

MS Service Leadership & Innovation • 12 classes/48 credits • Components of the curriculum: • Required - 3 courses, 8 credits total • Core – 4 courses, 16 credits • Electives – 4 courses, 16 credits. Any approved graduate level course (700 or 800 level courses) • 3 Exit Strategies: • Comprehensive Exam – 2 courses, 4 credits OR • Thesis – 8 credits OR • Graduate Project/Capstone – 2 course, 8 credits

  9. Getting Through Your Program

  10. Grade Distribution • Typically more B’s than A’s • RIT does not offer + or – • Grade of C satisfies graduation requirements but denotes low performance • GPA of 3.0 or higher required for good academic standing and degree certification

  11. Time Management • Time Management • Key to success in the program • Timeliness • Being on time is critical • Time expectations • Expect to spend ~ 10-12hrs outside of class (for each class)

Semester Conversion: 2013 • Fall 2013 will be the start of semesters • Advising has begun for students who start in quarters and will finish in semesters. • Affected students will be given an IAP (Individual Advising Plan) • Students who stay on track will experience no loss of progress towards degree completion

  13. Seven Year Rule • You need to complete your degree within seven years of the first graduate course you take. This includes courses taken as a non- matriculated student. Any course that will count towards your degree must fall within the 7 year time frame.

  17. Role of Advising Student Responsibilities • Keep in touch with the advisor • Come prepared – tentative schedule, questions etc. • Follow prerequisite requirements • Be flexible regarding scheduling • Take/accept responsibilities for decisions • Know program requirements

Advisor responsibilities • Provide walk-in hours/appointments to meet regularly with students • Advise students of any necessary changes to the curriculum/program • Listen and help in the decision making process • Refer students to appropriate resources relating to academic and career matters

  21. Registration • Add/drop – the first 6 days of the quarter • Withdraw from a Course up to 8th week of the quarter • “W” on transcript and financial penalty. International students must be aware of any implications withdrawing will have on full time status. • Financial aid awards will be posted to student accounts AFTER the add/drop deadline.   22. Online vs. classroom vs. Accelerated You can complete your degree completely online, completely face to face or a combination of both Most courses are offered in both formats during the year. Some courses however are only offered either online or face to face. Accelerated classes – select classes are offered in winter or summer in a one week , all day format. Reading and assignments begin online before meeting in the classroom.

Online? or Classroom? • Same course content as traditional classes • Asynchronous -you can participate in discussions and work on other assignments at a time that works for you. • Online lecture, group assignments, video presentations • Uses variety of technology such as Adobe Connect • Still must adhere to assignment deadlines • Meet one night per week. • Lecture, group exercises, speakers, presentations • Outside of class expect to put in 10-12 hours per course • International students are required to take an equal or greater amount of face to face classes according to immigration guidelines. • Ex. 3 classes – 2 have to be face to face and one can be online. OR 4 classes – can be 2 face to face and 2 online

  26. Getting Started – Prioritize!!! • Courses in your program often take precedence over electives and advanced certificates and should be scheduled first • Schedule courses that are only offered once or twice a year first. Then build the rest of your schedule around them.
