  2. What Is AOIT? • Four-year program • Smaller Learning Community (cohort) • IT Focus • Affiliated with the National Academy Foundation • Only offered at AHS in Wake County

Who Is It For? • 90 rising 9th grade students (only freshmen are admitted) • Students who are at grade level • Students who enjoy working with technology • Students who want • Life experiences while in high school • College credit while in high school • If performing arts is a priority, there are often scheduling conflicts and we ask that you only apply if AOIT will be first choice

  4. What Makes It Different? • Interdisciplinary approach to curriculum • Field trips – Project Based Learning • Workplace Readiness • Job Shadowing • Internship • Technology Integration – software and equipment

  5. AOIT at a Glance • Computer course sequence • Applications OR Programming

  6. Freshmen Year • Integrated courses • English I (honors or academic) • World History (honors or academic) • Biology (honors or academic) • Computer applications I • Computer programming I • Math (some) • Honors and academic students are in the same class but have differentiated assessments.

  7. Freshmen Year • Field Trips • Job Shadowing • NC Zoo in Asheboro • Coastal day trip • Follow-up video-conference with San Diego AOIT program

  8. Sophomore Year • Integrated courses • English II (honors or academic) • Earth science (honors or academic) • Civics & Economics (honors or academic) • Computer applications II or C++

  9. Sophomore Year • Field trips • UNC Planetarium and Computer Science Department • Linville Falls and Caverns • Xtreme Beginnings

  10. Junior Year • Integrated courses • Paideia - English III and US History (honors and academic) • E-Commerce I or SAS Programming • Both Honors • Resume Preparation • Mock interviews • Internship preparation

  11. Internship • Required for AOIT graduation • Minimum 180 hours – 1 elective credit • Summer or part-time during school • Involves the use of technology • Paid • Assistance with finding placement, but responsibility is on student/parents

  12. Senior Year • E-Commerce II Honors or AP Computer Science – Java • English IV (honors and academic) • Internship presentation • Senior banquet – AOIT graduation

  13. Electives and Extra-Curriculars • No conflicts with sports or clubs • Students may take other electives such as AP, foreign languages, etc.

  14. Advisory Board • Made up of volunteers from local businesses • Monthly meetings • Assist with internship placement • Serve as guest speakers, curriculum advisors, etc. • Provide other assistance as needed • Membership is open

  15. Academy Support Team (AST) • Parents, students, community members • Officers are elected • Volunteers welcome • Provide AOIT support • Fundraising - equipment • Social events

  16. How To Apply • Application & Essay • Due March 12 • Online atwww.apexhigh.com/aoit • Middle school counselor • Apex MS, Lufkin MS, Salem MS • Siblings of current or alumni AOIT students have priority, then a lottery is used to fill the 90 spots

  17. Registration • Register as if NOT in AOIT • Notification will be via email by April 16. • Schedules will be changed as necessary
