  3. What is an atom? • The smallest particle of an element that retains its identity in a chemical reaction

  5. Subatomic particle • 3 kinds of subatomic particles • Electrons, protons, and neutrons

  9. nucleus • Each atom contains a nucleus • Inside the nucleus are protons and neutrons • Outside the nucleus is electrons

Mass number and atomic number • Elements are different because they contain different numbers of protons • The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus in the atom in that element • The symbol for atomic number is Z • The atomic number identifies the element and can be found on the periodic table

  13. Mass number • The total number of protons + neutrons in an atom • See table on page 110 • Add the number of protons and neutrons and see if that equals the mass number
