  1. Motivation • A learning theory

  2. Theories and theorists • Self-Determination Theory: Deci and Ryan • ARCS Model: Keller • Pyramid of Success: John Wooden

  3. Self Determination Theory This theory is based upon motivation and personality that hones in on three needs of an individual. • The need for: • Competence • Autonomy • Relatedness The goal of this theory is for these needs to be fulfilled in an intrinsic matter. Intrinsic being the most effective form of motivation.

  4. Classroom Uses Relatedness- Students need to be able to relate to their instructor (building relationships) and the material (intrinsic motivation to learn material). Edward Deci Competence- Every student needs to experience mastery. Autonomy- Through the teaching of routines, students are self sufficient to carry out tasks. Richard Ryan

  5. A.R.C.S Model ARCS model is systematic for generating and sustaining motivation. Keller was inspired by the challenge of measuring motivation during his first year as a professor at Syracuse University. John Keller

  6. 4 Parts of the A.r.c.s model and uses • Attention- This can be gained by arousal, surprises or uncertainty or by stimulating curiosity through challenging questions. • Relevance- Using concrete methods to introduce new topics. Showing/ modeling how this learning will be useful later. • Confidence- Help students realize that the juice is worth the squeeze. Provide short term goals and objectives for them to achieve. • Satisfaction- The learning being done must be satisfying for students. Feedback and encouragement must be given to students at every opportunity.

  7. The Pyramid of Success “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.” John Wooden John Wooden

  8. Overview The pyramid of success is about an individual having the motivation to act a certain way and achieve their best. Each trait in the pyramid builds upon the others and it is a different way to look at motivation. As a young teacher Wooden searched for a different way to assess and motivate his students. These ideas took form in the pyramid.

  9. Application The application of the pyramid of success in a classroom is really a change in how we attempt to motivate our students. The pyramid gives building blocks to teach and a different view on what is important when motivating students to learn.
