  2. Regognition by legislation • 1985 sustainability was first mentioned indirectly in laws governing the Icelandic tourism. • 2005 a new Tourism Act was approved. Guiding principles: • Icelandic culture • Environmental protection • Professionalism • Safeguarding of consumer interests

  3. The first strategy regarding sustainable tourism approved by the ministry of tourism. main emphasis on beautification less understanding of cultural and social aspects 1997 a turning point?

  4. Approved by “Alþingi” The parliament. Has therefore more potential of being a powerful tool.. thus being used in the near future.. TOURISM PLAN 2006 – 2015

  12. Our targets are as follows • 80% of travelers to Iceland should believe that Iceland is among the leading nations in environmental concerns / issues. • 80% of travelers to Iceland should not think Iceland is overcrowded by tourists, within carrying capacity.
