  1. We Are Brothers Genesis 13:6-9

  2. We Are Brothers • We see this idea of “brothers” throughout the scriptures • In the OT, we see it in reference to those who were related, of the same family, tribe or nation • Let’s notice some things about brothers from Abraham…

  3. Genesis 13 • v. 8 – “for we are brethren” • Brethren means kindred or like • Abraham and Lot were not actual brothers; Abraham was Lot’s uncle • So the word is not always used to represent blood relatives born of the same father and mother

  4. Genesis 13 • So then how are we brothers? • How are we alike? • We are alike because we are in Christ, born again and washed in His blood • I Peter 2:9

  5. As Brothers, We… • 1. Love each other • Love is generally inherent in those who are related by blood • Jesus said the 2nd great command was to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matt. 22:39) • “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love” (Rom. 12:10)

  6. As Brothers, We… • 1. Love each other • Paul said we are taught by God to love one another (I Thess. 4:9) • We are to love one another fervently with a pure heart (I Pet. 1:22) • Love is more than just a word spoken to others (I Jn. 3:16-18)

  7. As Brothers, We… • 1. Love each other • “Let brotherly love continue” (Heb. 13:1) • Brotherly love (philadelphia) is a unique kind of love • It’s exactly the love that we are to have for one another as brothers

  8. As Brothers, We… • 2. Look out for one another • God asked Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” (Gen. 4:9) • “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” • Certainly we have a responsibility to our brothers

  9. As Brothers, We… • 2. Look out for one another • Paul said that “none of us lives to himself” (Rom. 14:7) • According to Hebrews 10:24 we are to consider one another • We are to “rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep” (Rom. 12:15)

  10. As Brothers, We… • 2. Look out for one another • If we do not look out for one another, then how will we know when one is overtaken in sin? (Gal. 6:1) • If we do not look out for one another, then how will we know each other’s burdens? (Gal. 6:2)

  11. As Brothers, We… • 3. Settle Disputes • There was a dispute between the herdsmen of Abraham and Lot • They could have allowed that to come in between them • Instead, Abraham took the high road, not esteeming himself better than Lot

  12. As Brothers, We… • 3. Settle Disputes • In Matthew 18:15ff, Jesus talks about settling disputes with our brothers • In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus says it’s so important that we should do it first, prior to coming before God • How can I expect to be in heaven with a brother that I can’t get along with on earth?

  13. As Brothers, We… • 3. Settle Disputes • Doing this means we must be forgiving of one another (Eph. 4:32) • How can we expect to be forgiven of our sins if we do not forgive others of their sins? (Matt. 6:14-15) • Brothers do not hold grudges, but forgive and forget

  14. As Brothers, We… • 4. Encourage one another • We all need encouragement • As brothers, it should be our aim and focus to lift one another up • We should pursue things that create peace and edify one another (Rom. 14:19)

  15. As Brothers, We… • 4. Encourage one another • “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up…” (I Thess. 5:11 – ESV) • We should speak that which builds up (Eph. 4:29) • Our coming together is in part to exhort one another (Heb. 10:24-25)

  16. As Brothers, We… • 5. Are of the same mind • Paul said we should let the mind of Christ be in us all (Phil. 2:5) • If we all have the mind of Christ, then we will be unified in our mindset • “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Ps. 133:1)

  17. As Brothers, We… • 5. Are of the same mind • Peter said we should have unity of mind(I Pet. 3:8) • Paul urges us to maintain unity (Eph. 4:3) • Jesus even prayed that all those who believe in Him would be one (Jn. 17:21)

  18. As Brothers, We… • 6. Serve one another • Paul said we should “through love serve one another” (Gal. 3:13) • I am to be a servant to my brothers • Jesus set a perfect example as a servant in His life on earth (Matt. 20:28)
