We also compare the properties of Ossol products to competitors. • We test raw materials and additives before use and develop suitable products for specific applications.

  8. FUNDAMENTALS OF LUBRICANTS

  9. The proper selection of lubricating oils for any particular application needs careful attention. Some of the important parameters in the assessment of lubricating oil for machines are: • Operating speed • Pressure and load • Temperature • It is important to keep in mind that, in considering lubrication requirements, speed means surface speed, or the rate at which one surface moves past the other. In rotating parts, this is determined partly by revolution per minute and partly by the diameter e.g., A two inch dia shaft rotating at 1000 rpm has the same surface speed as a four inch dia shaft rotating at 500 rpm. • High surface speed demands a lubricant that not only can be disturbed rapidly to the friction (in an oil) or low plastic friction (in a grease). This means, in general, the higher the surface speed, the lower the viscosity of the oil.

  10. Pressure is load per unit area. The pressure between frictional surfaces has an important effect both on the viscosity and the character of the oil, or on both the consistency and load carrying ability of the grease. • Higher the pressure, or load per unit area, the greater the tendency to squeeze out the oil or the grease. Therefore, as the pressure increases, the viscosity of the oil or the consistency of the grease will also usually have to be increased, and if pressure become very high, extreme pressure resistant characteristics may need to be provided in the oil or special load carrying ability in the grease. • As temperature rises, oils thin out and greases soften. As temperature falls, oils thicken and greases stiffen. Also as temperature rises, the rate of oil oxidation increases and high temperature may break the structure of the grease.

  11. If the temperature of the frictional surfaces is high, then we must require an oil which is of high viscosity at normal temperatures, so that when thinned out by heat, it will still have the required body to afford proper lubrication; or a grease of sufficiently still consistency at ordinary temperatures so that, when softened by heat, it will stay in place. Likewise, an oil designed for high temperature lubrication must possess the proper stability characteristics to prevent the formation of harmful deposits, whilst a grease must have both structural stability (to prevent separation into oil and soap) and chemical stability (to prevent oxidation). On the other hand, an oil suitable for use when the temperature is low, as in refrigerated rooms or outdoors in winter, must be sufficiently fluid to distribute properly at those low temperatures, and therefore will have a light body at ordinary temperatures. Similarly, a grease for low temperature lubrication, in order not to stiffen too much when cooled, will have a rather soft consistency at ordinary temperatures.

  12. Several special characteristics are built into these oils by incorporating selected additives to improve their performance in situations where their use is recommended. The use of these specially formulated OSSOL lubricating oils in industrial plants will improve operation in terms of better production, lower maintenance costs, lower production cost and lowest ultimate lubrication cost. Ultimately bring SAVINGS to Organization with OSSOL POWER, OSSOL PERFORMANCE & OSSOL PROTECTION.
