  2. What is the ?? • The British Council is the UK’s international cultural relations body • We work in: • Education • Arts • Society • English Language • What we do in the USA: • www.britishcouncil.org/usa

  3. Why go teach in the UK? • Quality-assured education provider • Opportunities for professional development • A different teaching environment • A dynamic multicultural society

  4. NOTE: • A new UK coalition government was elected in May 2011 • Changes still to come! • Devolution! • Differences between England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland

  5. The National Curriculum • Children 5-16 must receive full-time education • Divided into stages 1-4 • By 2015, will be extended to 18 • Teens 16-18 can attend: • “Sixth Form Colleges” • Further Education Institutions • Core Subjects (not including other compulsory courses) • Math - Modern Foreign Languages • Science - Art & Design • Design and technology - Physical Education • History - Citizenship • Geography - Music

  6. Testing • GCSEs • Around 10 single-subject exams taken after 5 years of secondary education • Students may leave secondary schooling after taking • A-Levels • Taken 2 years after GSCE’s • Single-subject exams required for entry into university in UK • US equivalents – see NARIC (www.naric.org.uk)

  7. Qualifications • England & Wales: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) • Scotland: contact/register with General Teaching Council for Scotland • Northern Ireland: contact/register with Northern Ireland Department of Education • Details (including contact info) available later

How to obtain qualification (England/Wales) • Undergraduate degree with QTS • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) • School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) • Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (England only) • Graduate Teacher Programme (Wales only) • These are likely most appropriate for you

  9. How to obtain qualification (Scotland & Northern Ireland) • Case-by-case basis • Contact General Teaching Council for Scotland • Contact Northern Ireland Department of Education

Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP) • 4 years to achieve qualified teacher status • Find an available position first! • If you are qualified to teach in the US, you will most likely only need minimal “assessment-based training” • Training grants available • Qualifications to participate • Equivalent to a UK bachelors degree • Equivalent to GCSE grade C in math and English • (for stages 2-3, ages 7-14) Equivalent to GCSE grade C in science • See NARIC for equivalency information (www.naric.org.uk)

Visas (Part 2) • Tier 2 General Visa, Codes of Practice Section P (Education) • Shortage Occupation List • Secondary education: • Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or a combination of those • Special needs education professionals • Must be sponsored by employer! • If not on Shortage Occupation List, must meet “Resident Labour Market Test” • Employer must demonstrate that no resident worker could be found to take a job. • Details on UKBA website, www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk
