  1. Christ’s Pity and His Power over Disease and Death Mark 5:21-43

  2. The Christian metanarrative is the comprehensive (meta) story (narrative) of the creation, fall, redemption, and the consummation of this fallen humanity and this universe narrated by God through His Prophets and Apostles in the Bible. Consummation Creation Fall Mark 5:21ff

  4. Mark 5:22-23 What is a synagogue? • 22And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue,

  5. Synagogue • A place where Jews assembled for worship and study; as opposed to the Temple

  6. Look Back @ Another Reference to Synagogue Mark 3:1-6

  7. Mark 5:22 • And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him [Jesus], he fell at his feet,

  9. Mark 5:22-23 • And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

  10. Mark 5:24 See Christ’s unparalleled pity for the plight of fallen man which ultimately drives Him to do the will of the Father in the redemption of the world. • And Jesus went with him;

  11. Mark 5:24 Test Imagine the joy this man experiences en route back to his home only to be thrown in an emotional tailspin in a few hours. • And Jesus went with him;

  12. Mark 5:24-25 Being so accessible to the people must have worn Christ out Think paparazzi; only everyone • And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

  13. Mark 5:24-25 They all follow him for the same reason—His Power! • And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

  14. An Issue of Blood According to the Mosaic Law, this medical issue made this woman unclean

  15. Leviticus 15:19,25 • And if a woman have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. • And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean.

  16. An Interesting Duo • Male • A Ruler • Clean • He is humbled • Respected • Honored • Wealthy • 12 year old daughter • Female • An Outcast • Unclean • She is exalted • Rejected • Ashamed • Poor • 12 years of disease

  17. Mark 5:26 Can we say H-O-P-E-L-E-S-S? • And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

  18. Empathize with Her We can’t imagine living in such an age of ignorance; notice how God uses disease and death to drive people to the Savior?

  19. Mark 5:27 Why are stories with specific kinds of miracles like this so important? • When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

  20. If the four Gospels of Jesus Christ did not contain miracles we might be suspect of the miracles in the Acts of the Apostles by Luke. However, since Christ performed amazing miracles we are not surprised when His Apostles are able to do the same. Consummation Creation Fall Mark 5:21ff

  21. Mark 5:28 Why did this woman say this? • For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

  22. Mark 5:29 • And straightway the fountain [flow] of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague [disease].

  23. Mark 5:30 • And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

  24. Mark 5:31-32 • And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? • And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

  25. Mark 5:33 • But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

  26. Mark 5:34 • And he said unto her, • Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

  27. Consider All We Can Learn about God From This Narrative So Far

  28. Jesus Is • Moved with compassion for Jairus • Out and among the people • NOT some supernatural force that doesn’t know when He is healing and doing things • Desirous of personal contact/relationships

  29. Mark 5:35 Her Death is God’s Will • While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

  30. Mark 5:36 • As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

  31. Let’s Learn; Look @ v. 34 & v. 36

  32. Please Notice It is NOT the words or the petition that heals or saves

  33. v. 34 • 34And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faithhath made thee whole; v. 36 • 36As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

  34. What is Faith? Hebrews 11:1

  35. What is Faith? • Now faith is the substancehypostasisof things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen(Heb 11:1) • Hypostasis (AV) • confidence2x, confident 1x • person1x, substance 1x

  36. Commentary/Paraphrase Hebrews 11:1 • Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; • it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.

  37. What does it mean to Believe? Belief is a state or habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing.

  38. Mark 5:37-38 Eyewitness Details • And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. • And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

  39. Mark 5:39 Jesus’ words serve to heighten the conflict between the believers and unbelievers • And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

  40. Mark 5:40 • And they laughed him to scorn. • But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

  41. There are many ways in which Jesus could have demonstrated His Deity Yet, He chooses ways motivated by His pity for human pain and suffering

  42. Mark 5:41 Jesus spoke Aramaic; your NT is an inspired Greek translation of the Words of Christ • And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talithacumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

  43. Mark 5:42 Consider This • And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

  44. How are we supposed to believe in a man who says He will bring himself back from the grave; If He can’t resurrect others?

  45. The Resurrection of the Dead Widow of Zarephath's son Shunamite's son Man tossed into Elisha's Tomb Widow of Nain's son Jairus’ Daughter Lazarus A multitude of people Jesus of Nazareth Tabitha (aka Dorcas) Eutychus Elijah, Elisha, God’s Spirit, King Jesus, the Godhead, Peter, Paul

  46. Mark 5:43 • Once again, among Jews the instructions are clear—say nothing to anyone. • Eating is the further proof that she is truly resurrected. • And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
