  3. George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India. The Blairs were working in India on behalf of the British Empire. Blair would later describe his family’s socioeconomic status as "lower-upper middle class.”

  4. Orwell was educated inEngland at Eton College. He was a policeman in Burma from 1922 to 1927. Then, he returned to Europe to become a writer. He was poor for several years, which resulted in the book, Down and Out.In 1936, Orwell joined the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. He was wounded in the fighting. Late in the war, Orwell had to flee Spain for his life.
