  1. Localisation of livestock systems Marta Pérez-Soba Janneke Roos Sander Mücher Han Naeff Alterra, The Netherlands Brussels, 14th June 2001

  2. Biophysical features Land cover: CORINE 43 Others: altitude, soils, climate Selection 7 classes First location maps Validation: geo-referenced national/regional databases Conclusions for the ELPEN system Where are the livestock systems located?

  3. CORINE Land cover Scale 1:100.000, 43 classes Minimum mapping element: 25 ha

  4. CORINE Land Cover From the 43 classes we selected 7 classes: • pastures • land principally occupied by agriculture • annual crops associated with permanent crops • complex cultivation patterns • moors and heath lands • natural grasslands • agro-forestry areas

  5. ValidationThe Netherlands andEngland Analysis of farm geo-referenced statistical data in relation to CORINE land cover data Dutch Farm data (Giab 1998) national level regional level English data (MAFF) • All livestock holdings are geo-referenced • Overlay of the farm database with CORINE land cover • Result: rules indicating the % of holdings / livestock units that are located per CORINE class in a region

  6. Overlay farm data with CORINE • Farm 203 • nr of dairy cows: 40 • nr of sheeps: 100 • fodder area: 25 ha • pasture area: 30 ha • cadastral area: 60 ha • etc

  7. Percentage of grazing (dairy+beef+sheep & goats) holdings per CORINE class and per Dutch province contin. urban discontin. urban non-irrig. arable fruit trees pastures complex cult. land princ. agric broad leaf forest mixed forest natural grassland Validation regional level Case study: The Netherlands Non irrigated arable land Pastures Complex cultivation patterns

  8. Validation regional level Case study: The Netherlands Percentage of holdings per CORINE class and Dutch province Dairy Beef Sheep & Goats From this analysis we can derive regionally specific rules for the location of different grazing systems Non irrigated arable land Pastures Complex cultivation patterns

  9. Disclosure problem Case study England • All livestock holdings are geo-referenced • Overlay of this database with CORINE land cover But we encountered a lot of disclosure problems ! • And because of the mouth and foot disease crisis: • We worked with provisional data on total number of agricultural holdings per CORINE class

  10. contin. urban discontin. urban non-irrig. arable fruit trees pastures complex cult. land princ. agric broad leaf forest mixed forest natural grassland Comparing England with NE Percentage of total number of agricultural holdings per CORINE class Netherlands England

  13. National and regional specific rules are needed to locate livestock systems If no georeferenced data are available:use regional expert knowledge ELPEN system is a powerful tool to locate livestock systems since it is able to store and apply these rules Conclusions Variation in land cover at national and regional level, and per livestock type
