  4. Today’s Agenda • Homework questions • Insurance forms, PTSA forms, Driver’s License Handbook • Creating and justifying logical arguments

  5. Homework Answers. Questions? 5 12 -7

  6. Your Pair’s task • Finish problems 20 through 23 all • Be SPECIFIC! • To save time, draw figures 4 and 5 by the shaded and un-shaded boxes with the correct dimensions.

  7. What are we learning today? Developing a convincing argument Justifying your conclusion with evidence Why does it matter? Convincing someone that your opinion/excuse is justified. Finding mistakes Many jobs depend on evidence or convincing arguments: police, lawyer, sales person, advertising, insurance… Section 1.1.4 Are you convinced?

  8. Logical Arguments “I don’t have my homework today because…” Is your teacher going to be convinced? Will it make a difference whether you say that the dog ate in or whether you bring in a doctor’s note? Imagine your friend says, “I know that shape is a square because it has 4 right angles.” Did your friend tell you enough to convince you?

  9. Logical Arguments Many jobs depend on your ability to convince other people that your ideas are correct. For instance, a defense lawyer mist be able to form logical arguments to persuade the jury or judge that his or her client is innocent. Today you are going to use reasoning and justifying to focus on what makes a statement convincing.
