Language Arts Block • Shared reading, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar through Science or Social Studies content • Universal Access -differentiation, small group instruction, guided reading and conferring. • 9:15 am. Writing • Focus on three types of writing: Expository, Opinion and Narrative • 9:35 Recess • 9:55 Writing continues • 10:15 am. Mathematics Block • Math instruction using gradual release of responsibility process. • Differentiation done through lesson compacting and small group instruction • 11:30 am. Lunch • 12:15 pm. DLIP students go to Ms Hultenius to receive English Language arts • Afternoon * 12:15 pm. 606 students will receive mathematics and Social Studies instruction with Sr. Herrera • 2:10 pm. Closure/Jobs • 2:15 pm. Dismissal

Math with Sr. Herrera • * Sr. Herrera’s students go to Ms. Hultenius’ class for ELL • Afternoon (DLIP students in room 606) • 12:20 pm. English Language Arts incorporating common core standards. Focus on English grammar, spelling and writing • 2:10 Closure • 2:15 pm. Dismissal

5. Dual Language Spanish Immersion Program (DLIP) • DLIP will continue to be a 60% Spanish and 40% English model. • Spanish is spoken 100% in class by teacher, students are expected and encouraged to practice and make use of their second language in class. • Curriculum taught in Spanish: Language Arts, Mathematics –and Science /Social Studies. • English Language Arts with a focus in advanced grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing will be taught by Ms. Hultenius. • English Learners will be supported for an additional 20 minutes in Ms. Hultenius class using guided reading strategies in small group instruction.

6. Homework (DLIP)Language Arts • Spanish • Reading : 20 - 30 minutes in Spanish (KidzBiz counts) • Read an article of achieve 3000 twice a week. • Write a response to an article from achieve 3000 (1 page) once a week. Usually on Thursday. • Grammar/vocabulary: as needed • Math: IXL twice a week and Word problem Process twice a week • English: • Achieve 3000 must be done once a week. • Every Tuesday - Write an open ended response to KidBiz article (one paragraph) • Mandatory, reading 20 minutes in English.

7. Homework Ms. HulteniusLanguage Arts • Room 606 • Reading : 20 - 30 minutes (KidBiz counts) • Read 8 KidBiz articles weekly (Monday – Sunday) with a passing score of 75% or higher the FIRST try. Incomplete assignments are added to the following week’s total due. • Only 5 Kidbiz articles required once reading “Lexile level 800,” has been reached. • Nightly writing (open ended question or genre specific). • Grammar/vocabulary as needed • Math (Sr. Herrera): word problems using the 4 step process and two days of IXL Math 20 minutes each time • Social Sciences (Sr. Hererra): written projects and/or research reports done in classroom • Science: projects in class • Packet due Friday (packet includes cursive & vocabulary words)

8. Expectations – Ms. Hultenius & Sr. Herrera Behavior Homework • First verbal warning – student is made aware of his/her behavior and is asked to remedy the behavior • Second verbal warning – student’s name is written on board and will stand for 5 minutes on red line during recess. • Third verbal warning – Student will directly signs in on the behavior log., and will lose recess • Fourth verbal warning –Student will call home to explain his/her behavior to parent or guardians. • Homework log in system: students must turn in homework every day. • Missing or incomplete assignments: student’s name will be written on the behavior board and will complete assignments during recess. • Written excuses signed by parents are accepted due to emergencies or other causes. Student must still complete, turn in and log in their late assignments the same day. • *Remember, students are allowed to come early to class to complete assignments or to get help from teacher. Classrooms are open for this purpose at 7:20 am. • Students are also allowed to stay in class after school to finish homework for 20 – 30 minutes.

9. Classroom Management – Sr. Herrera • Table points: table with the most points will receive tickets for the raffle prizes • Sticker system for best observed behaviors and for the use of Spanish in class. Stickers received, will be used for raffle prizes every two weeks • Line points: class will receive up to 8 points each day if class follows the line rules in school. This includes the way they line up, the way they walk in line and their behavior in line. If class accumulates an agreed upon number of points at the end of each quarter, they will have extra PE time once a quarter. It sounds easy, but keep in mind that the entire class is accountable for their behavior in class. One error from one student, will cause the class to not get points.

10. Classroom Management – Ms. Hultenius • Line points • Table points: Every 2 weeks winning table earns a picnic • Treasure box: For every 20 KidBiz activities Treasure box donations (small trinkets) greatly appreciated • Picnics: When student reaches 100 Kid-Biz

11. Curriculum for the year • Common Core • This year CVESD is implementing “Common Core” model of instruction. • Common Core is an educational K-12 curriculum reform. Its goal is to address the needs of all students using a common set of strategies that are aligns to Standards across the country. • It is a new philosophy in teaching and a different way of thinking . • See Ms. Hultenius’ website for specific Common Core Standards and additional information • You can also visit the CVESD website to obtain more in depth information about this new way of teaching.

12. Mathematics - Differentiation • Curriculum Compacting and Universal Access • Students take a Pre-Assessment before the beginning of a unit to show what they already know. • 90% or above, students work independently on IXL concepts to master the standards. • Bellow 90%, students study lessons and concepts with teacher. Students that need extra support will receive extra instruction in a small group setting, during Universal Access activities. • At end of unit, all students take a Pot-Assessment to show mastery of specific unit standards

15. PTO Membership • This year we are strongly encouraging parents to join the Heritage PTO for $10.00 • PTO moneys pays for computer software (Success Maker). The money brings special programs to Heritage, including science days, school carnival and book-fairs. • PTO also covers ACE awards medals, supports safety patrol, copying and school computer technical support

16. House Keeping • Sign in “Curriculum Night” attendance form • Sign for parent teacher conferences for the week of September 12 through September 19. • Pick up and item from the wish list board if you would like to donate such an item for your class. • Thank You for your continued support!
