  1. The Systematic Approach to Herbal Therapy

  2. Herbal remedies were intended by God to be a blessing, but they can only serve their purpose if we know how to use them. Today we are going to look at some principles of how to use them in our homes and in our ministry to others.

  3. The systematic approach to herbal therapy is the healing of the body as a whole. It is understanding the cause, prevention and cure of disease. It is understanding the how and why herbs work for so many diseases.

  4. Here is how it works: 1. All herbal remedies are drawn from four basic groups. 2. The effect of the herb taken is defined by what group it is in. 3. Focus is on the body rather than the injured part alone.

  5. As with any other natural remedy the focus should be on the body as a whole and not on the injured part alone. 1 Corinthians 12:26, “And whether one member suffereth: all the members suffer with it.”

  6. Herbs themselves do not heal, but they react upon the body by kindling its vital force. Just as fire from burning wood produces heat. Nutrients from food and herbs produce energy (vital force).

  7. The four categories of herbs can be separated into two types. The first type are those that influence the actual life process of the body. The second includes herbs that directly affect the structure of the body.

  8. Having Therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in fear of God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 Body Four Herb Categories Body Function Structure Cells Tissue Aromatics Astringents Speed up, Stimulate Tone & Tighten Tissue, Contracts Demulcents Bitters Sooth & Soften, Slows Down Loosens, Cleanses, Causes Oxidation I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Romans 12:1 To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen. Romans 16:27

  9. How do herbs influence the body functions? 1. Aromatics - Speed up and stimulate cell functions. This includes all spicy and fragrant herbs that you can smell, like Peppermint. 2. Demulcents (or Mucilaginous) - Calm down, soothes and softens cell activity. This includes all slippery or slimy herbs, like Aloe Vera.

  10. How do herbs influence structure? 1. Astringents - Contract, tone and tighten tissue. This includes all herbs that make your lips pucker when you put them in your mouth. Roots and barks are examples for this category. 2. Bitters – Loosen and relax tissue structure. This includes all herbs that make you want to spit them out when you put them in your mouth.

  11. How do the herbs work? 1. Aromatics – Stimulate the nervous system causing an increase in the systemic functions of the body as well as an increase of activity on a cellular level. These work on the circulatory system. 2. Demulcents – Absorb toxins like a sponge, drawing away poisons that cause inflammation thus easing the localized pollution. These work on the intestine and the colon.

  12. How do the herbs work? 3. Astringents – Have the ability to contract living tissue because of the presence of tannins. They affect mainly the immune system, blood and urinary system. 4. Bitters – Help by bringing in a large amount of oxygen. This property alone tends to accelerate the body’s ability to absorb other active compounds that strengthen the cell wall and other components of the cell. These have an affect on the liver.

  13. What are some examples of herbs in their groups? 1. Aromatics – garlic, peppermint, ginger, cayenne, chamomile, sage, fennel, lavender, hops, cloves, rosemary, anise, coriander seed. 2. Demulcents – aloe vera, flax seed, comfrey, fenugreek seed, wild violet leaves, marshmallow root, slippery elm bark, sassafras. 3. Astringents – yellow dock, white oak ark, yarrow, plantain, shepherd’s purse, cranesbill, raspberry, rhubarb root, uva ursi.

  27. Fruits produce the hydrochloric acid needed for digestion. Lemons, oranges, grapefruit, apples, grapes, ect! • Vegetables like lettuce, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, potatoes, carrots, beets, celery, parsley, spinach, cucumber, ect., are base. The kidneys produce salt bicarbonate from acid and base foods which neutralize toxins in the blood. Fruits and vegetables should be eaten at separate meals. • Nuts and Legumes, olives, avocados, coconuts, lecithin are buffers or emulsifiers which help balance the pH and the hormones. • Seeds and Grains like apricot seeds, grapefruit seeds, apple seeds, ect., and wheat, oats, rice, ect., are bitters. Bitters have the ability to stimulate the production of gastric juices. 36. “God would have his people clearly understand that they will be visited according to their obedience or transgression. Wickedness and disease have increased with every successive generation. The land has labored under the curse which man has brought upon it because of continued disobedience.

  37. "The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse

  38. devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate." Many marvel that the human race have so degenerated, physically, mentally, and morally. They do not understand that it is the violation of God's constitution and laws, and the violation of the laws of health, that has produced this sad

  39. degeneracy. The transgression of God's commandments has caused his prospering hand to be removed.” Spiritual Gifts, vol.4a p.123

  40. “It is just as much sin to violate the laws of our being as to break one of the ten commandments, for we cannot do either without breaking God's law. We cannot love the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength while we are loving our appetites, our tastes, a great deal better than we love the Lord. We are daily lessening our strength to glorify God, when He requires all our

  41. strength, all our mind. By our wrong habits we are lessening our hold on life, and yet professing to be Christ's followers, preparing for the finishing touch of immortality.” Councils on Diets Foods p.44.3

  42. “In the Ten Commandments God has laid down the laws of His kingdom. Any violation of the laws of nature is a violation of the law of God. The Lord has given His commandments to be a wall of protection round His created beings, and those who will keep themselves from the defilement of appetite and passion may become partakers of the divine nature.

  43. Their perceptions will be clear. They will know how to preserve every faculty in health, so that it may be presented to God in service. The Lord can use them; for they understand the words of the great apostle: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not

  44. conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”” Signs of the Times, April 4, 1900 par.9

  45. “What a God is our God! He rules over His kingdom with diligence and care, and He has built a hedge--the ten commandments--about His subjects, to preserve them from transgression. In requiring obedience to the laws of His kingdom, God gives His people health and happiness, peace and joy. He teaches them that the perfection of character He requires can be attained

  46. only by becoming familiar with His Word. The psalmist declares, "The entrance of Thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple" [Ps. 119:130].” 13 Manuscript Release p. 261.4

  47. Acid/Alkaline balance is very important to prevent sickness and disease. Normal pH is 6.4 using the urine, saliva test paper. Cancer range is about 4.6, which means a very acid condition of the body. About 80% alkaline and 20% acid should help keep the pH at the normal range. Most all fruits and vegetables are alkaline. Most grains, seeds, nuts and legumes are acid producing. Alkaline producing grains are millet, quinoa, and buckwheat. Alkaline nuts are almonds and brazil nuts uncooked! Animal products take twice the amount of hydrochloric acid for digestion. Some may take up to three days to go through the body. Animal products are high in fat, high in protein, and have no fiber. Congestion creates heat, heat creates inflammation, inflammation causes sickness, and chronic sickness causes disease. Other items that create an acid condition are coffee, black tea, soda (Is a 2 pH which takes 32 glasses of water and may take up to three days to neutralize), alcohol, tobacco, drugs, sugar, table salt, white flour products, oils and free fats (oil separated from vegetables & nut butters). Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:21 Mike Bunnell, P.O. Box 600, Mill Spring, N.C., 28756 828-894-0316 www.healingherbs.biz
