  4. 3: Why was Hammurabi’s Code important? A: The laws are important because they were written down. With written laws, everyone could know the rules-- and the punishments

  5. 4: What impact did the Phoenicians have on the modern world? A: Were the world’s first trading empire. Brought rich goods from around the Mediterranean Sea: figs, olives, honey, spices, giraffes, warthogs, bears

  6. 5: Why did the Phoenicians need to develop an alphabet? How many letters did their alphabet have? A: They had so much trade, they needed to simplify writing * Only used 22 symbols. (Cuneiform had 100’s of characters)

  7. 6: Use of the Phoenician alphabet spread throughout the Mediterranean region. How do you think this occurred? A: The alphabet was spread by traders who sailed all over the Mediterranean Sea.

  8. 7: Explain the importance of Phoenician writing. A: The simple Phoenician alphabet was far easier to learn. With the alphabet, many more people could learn to write.
