Hogan • Most recent appointment: President, University of Connecticut • Historian – A specialist in post-World War II diplomatic history and the Cold War • "We are going to be looking very clearly at how we can focus our resources to make sure the best parts of the university remain intact and continue to improve.“ – Michael Hogan

  4. University Financial Challenges • State owes UI ~$800M • Measures to counter the challenges • Furloughs • Hiring freeze • Voluntary separation and retirement programs • 9.5% tuition hike • FY11 state budget cuts

  5. Our (ECE) challenges • 4.5% reduction in our state budget allocation • $619K • Impact • Ability to invest in high-impact areas (bio, energy and sustainability, computing,…) • Retention challenges • Shrinking faculty • Retirements: 7 full and 1 associate professors • Resignations: 1 full and 1 associate professors • Hiring freeze: 2 assistant professors joining us this year

  6. Enrollments Are Up • Fall’10 • 373 accepts • 359 enrolled as of the first day of classes • Fall’11 • 408 accepts • Over 80transfer students • ~1450 undergraduates

  7. U.S. News & World Report Rankings • Undergraduate • Computer engineering: 3 • (1. M.I.T.; 2. Berkeley; 3. Illinois) • Electrical engineering: 2 • (1. MIT; 2. Illinois, Stanford; 4. Berkeley)

  8. U.S. News & World Report Rankings • Graduate • Computer engineering: 5 • (1. CMU, M.I.T., Stanford, Berkeley; 5. Illinois) • Electrical engineering: 4 • (1. M.I.T.; 2. Stanford, Berkeley; 4. Illinois)

  9. Degrees Awarded - AY 08-09 • BS: 263 • MS: 93 • PhD: 56

  10. New ECE Building Designed to be the most energy efficient engineering facility in the world

  11. Timeline • 7/13/09: $47.5M State commitment signed into law • 3/10/10: Building design approved by the Board of Trustees • Construction commences Spring 2011 • Move-in date: Fall 2013

  12. Inspiring education through immersion in ground-breaking research 121,060 NSF

  13. ~1500 kW Photovoltaic Production ~300 kW from solar array on site ~1200 kW from solar array on the roof of adjacent parking structure

  14. Test bed for optoelectronic envelope technologies and ambient and plasma lighting control for building energy efficiency Advanced daylighting technologies • Optimized collection and distribution of natural daylight throughout the building • High-efficiency reflectors • Light pipes • Non-imaging concentrators • Prof. Gary Eden • Microplasma-based lighting • Thin, planar lighting sources with efficiencies at least 2-3 times higher than incandescent sources • The excellent form factor of this technology delivers illumination to the point of use much more efficiently than fluorescent lighting Prof. Kanti Jain

  15. ECE Faculty Highlights

  16. Assistant Professor Lynford Goddard received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) Assistant Professor Xiuling Li received theDARPA Young Faculty award Four ECE Assistant Professors won the NSF CAREER Award Outstanding Junior Faculty Lynford Goddard Xiuling Li Shobha Vasudevan Alejandro Dominguez-Garcia Eric Pop Yih-Chun Hu

  17. Three Named IEEE Fellows • Andrew Singer for contributions to signal processing techniques for digital communications • Jennifer Bernhard for development of multifunctional, reconfigurable and integrated antennas • Nitin Vaidya for contributions to wireless network protocols and mobile communications Andrew Singer Jennifer Bernhard Nitin Vaidya

  18. Five-year Program on Resilient Smart Grid • $18.8 M program funded by the Departments of Energy and Homeland Security • Bill Sanders will serve as director • Partners: Dartmouth, U.C. Davis and Washington State University • Objective: The realization of a modernized, reliable, and efficient power grid, to guarantee delivery of electricity and maintain critical operations, even when malicious cyber attacks occur

  19. NSF EBICS center • Emergent Behaviors of Integrated Cellular Systems (EBICS) Center at Illinois, MIT, and Georgia Tech • Will advance research in complex biological systems • Will develop programs to attract students to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics • Prof. Rashid Bashir, Director of the Micro- and Nano-Technology Lab, leads one of theresearch thrusts of the Illinois group

  20. NSF $3M Grant for Neuro-engineering Education • 5-year grant is provided through NSF’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program • Audition – By learning how the brain processes sound, researchers will be able to build better cochlear implants and other types of hearing aids, among other benefits. • Neuroimaging – This work will focus on unlocking the mysteries of brain functioning and identify what parts of the brain are active under various circumstances. • Brain-machine interfaces – This forward-looking thrust will examine how brain signals recognize intent. Applications could include: (a) rehabilitation – for example, a paraplegic could direct the movement of a wheelchair through thought; or (b) visual implants that stimulate the optic nerve and restore sight. Todd Coleman Doug Jones

  21. Parallel Processing Book • Wen-mei Hwu and David Kirk of NVIDIA have written a new text on parallel processing • Book gives programmers tools to optimize GPUs • Text developed out of course taught by Hwu and Kirk in 2007 David Kirk and Wen-Mei Hwu

  22. “Making Engineering Fun” • Prof. Elyse Rosenbaum led “Making Engineering Fun,” an all-day workshop for 18 teachers of grades 4 through 8. • The workshop covered: microelectronics, waves, static electricity, and heat. • Lesson plans and material lists were provided to the teachers, along with the opportunity to take part in the demonstrations and experiments.
