Practice Hour Requirements • What are the required practice hours? • In accordance with The Dental Hygienists Act and regulations, a member of the Register of Dental Hygienists (Practising) must submit evidence that he or she has practised a minimum number of hours in the three-year period immediately preceding the year for which registration/renewal is sought. • Minimum practice hours are as follows: • If you graduated within 12 months of registration/renewal, - there are no minimum practice hours. • If you graduated within 24 months of registration/renewal, - 400 practice hours are required. • If you graduated more than 24 months of registration/renewal, - 600 practice hours are required.

  4. Practice Hour Requirements • When does this requirement become effective? • This requirement will take effect for the registration year commencing January 15, 2010. • Hours worked in 2007, 2008 and 2009 will be totaled January 2010

Practice Hour Requirements • Practice Hour Examples: • Graduated between January 15, 2009 and January 14, 2010 - no minimum practice hours are required • Graduated between January 15, 2008 and January 14, 2009 - 400 practice hours are required • Graduated before January 15, 2008 - 600 practice hours are required

Practice Hour Requirements • What constitutes Dental Hygiene Practice • One who represents that he/she is a dental hygienist and engages in the activities that involve the knowledge, skills and/or practice of dental hygiene. This person could be: • Dental hygiene clinician; • Educator; • Administrator; • Manager; • Health promoter; • Consultant; • Researcher; or • Sales representative

Practice Hour Requirements • Future Requirements: • After the requirements have been met in 2010: • Practice hours continue to be required for the three-year period immediately preceding the year for which registration/renewal is sought. • Example: In 2011, 600 hours would be required for years 2008, 2009, 2010.

  8. CPR • Certification/re-certification will be required annually. • Evidence of having successfully completed a Basic Rescuer (Level C) Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Course delivered in accordance with the guidelines established by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and completed within 12 months prior to registration/renewal is required. • A copy of your CPR is considered acceptable evidence. • Example: For renewal in January 2009, the card must display a date from January 1, 2008 to January 14, 2009.

CPR • MDHA and Find First Aid: • $30 for MDHA members • $40 for non-MDHA members • Dates: • Oct. 4th 9:00am-12:00 • Oct. 14th 6:00-9:00pm • Nov. 13th 6:00-9:00 pm • Dec. 9th 6:00-9:00pm • Call Brad Loewen: (204) 782-0390, www.findfirstaid.com • Will add classes if these ones fill up • If a group of eight or more want to get together they will come to you

Continuing Competency Program • Continuing Competency Program • Continuing Competency Committee will be appointed by Council • Committee will begin research & development of program • There are no continuing education requirements at this time • Detailed information will be forwarded to all RDHs once program is developed • You will have more than sufficient notice of any newly implemented requirements • Any new requirements will begin on a set date in the future, not prior to January 2009, and will not have retroactive expectations (i.e. will be in effect from that date forward). • MDHA continuing to offer course and lecture series

Assessment & Re-entry Program • When would one be required? • Out of practice for three or more years • If minimum practice hours are not met • Entry option for non-accredited or international graduates • If deemed necessary by the Board of Assessors for new applicants • Under development with the U of M, School of Dental Hygiene • Options out of province

  12. National Dental Hygiene Certification Requirement • Evidence of either successfully completing the NDHCE or being grand-parented by the NDHCB will be required by all new applicants after January 15, 2009. • Not required for renewal by currently registered members of the CDHM – Practising or Non-Practising.

  13. Professional Liability/Malpractice Insurance • Evidence of professional liability (malpractice) insurance coverage in and amount of at least $3,000,000 (yearly aggregate) is a requirement for issuance of CDHM registration/renewal. • If insurance is through CDHA – print a certificate of insurance from www.CDHA.ca – Members Only. • If insurance is through another carrier (CDSPI), a copy of your policy/certificate of insurance is required with your renewal application.

  14. Renewal of Registration • Renewal Documents will be mailed out at the end of October • Completed renewal form and payment must be received by the CDHM on or before January 1, 2009 in order for the office to review and process your renewal by January 14, 2009 • On the renewal forms: • Please complete all the sections that are applicable to the status requested (Practising or Non-practising) • Please ensure the declaration on the last page is dated and signed. • A late penalty fee - 20% of the annual registration fee will be imposed on renewal forms received after Jan.1, 2009. • Cheques may be postdated to January 15, 2009. There will be a $30.00 charge for returned cheques.

  15. Roster Updates • If you have completed education in Local Anaesthetic, Restorative, or Orthodontic skills over the last 12 months, or have achieved 3000 career hours and wish to be included on the appropriate roster, please contact the CDHM • A declaration will need to be completed • A new certificate and wallet card will be issued and register will be updated
