  1. Trailering • Objectives: • Required equipment • Trailering, launching and retrieving • Trailer and tow vehicle maintenance

Required Equipment • Right trailer for the job – match boat to trailer • Coupler matched to tow ball • Safety chains, tie downs, winch and bow restraint • Jack stand and foot or caster • Lights • Rollers and bunks (bolsters) • Tow vehicle • Load rating, hitch and drawbar with tow ball • Lights and mirrors

  3. Trailer Towing • Boat secured properly to trailer • Boat motor secured • Check all connections (winch, coupler, lights, chains…) • Check brakes, tires • Avoid quick sudden turns or swerves • Watch your side mirrors • Drive defensively • On long trips, stop and check the entire rig

  4. Launching • Prepare the boat to launch • Check ramp conditions • Line up your rig and back slowly until transom is afloat • Set parking brake and put in park • Vent or check for fumes • Check water depth and start engine • Remove bow chain and winch cable • Back boat off trailer

  5. Retrieval • Check ramp conditions • Back trailer to appropriate depth • Align boat and slowly put on trailer • Attach winch cable to bow eye and snug to bow, stop engine(s) • Pull out of water and check for proper seating • Clear the ramp • Remove drain plug • Prepare boat for trailering

  6. Maintenance • Tire pressure • Lubricate ball and coupler • Lubricate rollers, winch, jack and caster • Inspect bearings • Check lights and connectors • Check brakes

  7. HITCH TEST!
