  1. Identify antigens as molecules that trigger the immune response

  2. What is an Antigen? • An antigen is usually a large protein molecule that is foreign to the body. • They may be found on the surface of cells or be part of toxins injected into the body.

  3. The Bodies Response • When the body identifies an antigen it triggers the start of the immune response. The body has identified something foreign that needs to be removed. • The response of the body is now divided into specific and non-specific mechanisms.

  4. Explain why organ transplants should trigger an immune response

  5. Transplants • When an organ transplant is required, foreign material is transplanted into the body. Each individual has specific proteins on the surface of every cell. This identifies the bodies material as belonging to itself.

  6. The Bodies Response to Transplants • When a new organ is transplanted it does not possess the same ‘marker protein’ to identify it as belonging. The body will commence an immune response. • When an organ transplant is conducted the recipient requires immunosuppressant drugs for the remainder of their life. This stops an immune reaction occurring but leaves the recipient at risk of many common infections.
